Formal name, dates and daily hours

The formal event is Sapporo Autumn Fest 2026, written さっぽろオータムフェスト in Japanese. The organizer schedules it from Friday, September 11 through Saturday, October 3 in central Sapporo's Odori Park. All seven venue blocks open from 10:00 to 20:30, and last orders are at 20:00.

The festival began in 2008 as a showcase for food from Sapporo and across Hokkaido. The official site describes a roughly one-kilometre route with about 300 participating shops and more than two million visits in a typical year. That scale makes it a district-sized food event, not one market hall with a single entrance or checkout.

A stall, stage performance or rotating regional booth may use shorter dates or sell out before 20:00. The published closing time is not a guarantee that every dish remains available until last orders, so visit a priority vendor earlier in the day.

What to know

Seven blocks, seven different decisions

Block 4 is the information and walk-around-food square. Block 5 is EAT THE NORTH, with rotating Hokkaido ramen, Chinese cuisine, chicken, flour dishes, soba, sweets and deli programs. Block 6 is Sapporo FOOD JAM, including food and a stage program. Block 7 is the large bar area for Hokkaido drinks and dishes.

Block 8 is the Hokkaido Market for regional specialties and rotating municipalities. Block 10 is the meat-focused area, and Block 11 is the chef and beer terrace. The official FAQ lists new Block 5 vendors for September 18–24 and a Block 8 rotation for September 18–23, so a visitor returning this week may see a different lineup from opening week.

Open the official venue list and current guidebook before choosing. Menu prices, portions, allergens, alcohol availability and service times are set by individual vendors; there is no single admission price or all-inclusive tasting ticket.

What to know

Free entry, paid food and limited reserved tables

The official FAQ says admission is free and everyone may enter. Unreserved dining areas can be used without booking, subject to space and staff control. There is no general admission deadline, ticket inventory or event-wide sellout condition, but popular dishes and open tables can run out.

Block 7 accepts reservations for 18 seats in nine two-person tables, for groups of two to eight. The listed fee is ¥2,000 per person and includes a ¥2,000 drink ticket valid only at the Block 7 bar; the reserved use period is 90 minutes. Block 10 lists 20 reserved seats and requires a designated drink ticket priced at ¥2,000 for a two-person table or ¥4,000 for a four-person table; the listed use period is 80 minutes.

Both reservations use external live booking pages linked from the organizer. The FAQ publishes no common booking deadline or remaining-seat count. Treat the current booking screen as the authority, and assume a slot is unavailable when the system no longer offers it. Do not buy unofficial resale access or expect staff to recreate a missed reservation.

Payment, eating areas and takeout rules

Cashless payment is available at every block. The official FAQ says cash is also accepted except in Block 11, which is fully cashless. Supported brands may change, so carry more than one payment method and keep enough cash for other parts of the trip rather than relying on a single overseas wallet.

Food must be purchased directly from each stall; table service is not offered across the event. Chairs and tables are provided, with some covered seating for sun or rain. Visitors may also sit on permitted grass areas with a picnic sheet, but must keep paths and venue operations clear.

The official FAQ says food and drinks may not be brought in from outside, moved from one event block into another, or taken away from the venue. Consume a purchase in the block where it was bought and take its waste to that block's collection point. These public-health rules make a block-by-block plan more practical than carrying a meal along the full park.

What to know

Nearest subway stations and exact exits

Odori Station on the Namboku, Tozai and Toho subway lines is the practical stop for the eastern and central areas. The official access page lists Exit 5 for Block 4 and Exit 2 for Block 5. Exit 8, near Block 3, has an elevator and can be a useful step-free starting point, subject to the current station route.

For the western end, use Nishi 11-chome Station on the Tozai Line. Exit 4 serves Block 10 and Exit 1 serves Block 11. Starting at Nishi 11-chome and walking east, or starting at Odori and walking west, avoids unnecessary backtracking.

There is no parking or bicycle parking at the festival venue. The organizer recommends bus or subway travel and says the event itself creates no special traffic restrictions. Nearby paid parking can still fill, and drinking rules make public transport the safer default.

What to know

Rain, weather changes and crowd timing

The festival continues in rain. However, the organizer says individual events may be changed or cancelled because of weather and that changes will be announced in official notices. No postponement day or single cancellation decision time is published because the multiweek food market can remain open while a stage program changes.

Some seating is covered, but a roof is not guaranteed for every table or queue. Bring compact rainwear and a waterproof layer for the phone and wallet. Avoid a large umbrella in a dense food line, and do not shelter inside a stall work area or block an accessible route.

The official FAQ warns that weekday evenings and weekends can be busy. Visit shortly after 10:00 or in the mid-afternoon for a better chance of choosing a table, then leave extra time for the subway after dinner. Free entry does not guarantee immediate seating or a particular dish.

What to know

Luggage, accessibility, alcohol and photography

The organizer directs visitors with luggage to coin lockers at Odori Subway Station. Locker availability is not guaranteed, so leave large bags at accommodation or another confirmed storage point before the peak. Do not place a suitcase in an aisle, at the end of a dining bench or beside a vendor queue.

The access page links to Sapporo's barrier-free information and universal map. Restrooms are listed near Blocks 5, 7, 8 and 11. Assistance dogs are permitted under the applicable law even where ordinary pet seating is restricted; other pet rules vary by block and seating type.

Alcohol is for people aged 20 or older, and driving after drinking is prohibited. Smoking is limited to designated areas. Use a handheld camera without blocking the queue, ask before close portraits and do not treat food-preparation space as a photo set. Check the official News page and JMA forecast for weather changes. Save the correct subway exit, the block map, any reservation and a second payment method offline.
