Do this now
Follow these steps in order.
- 01
Confirm overseas use, contact details and authentication methods with your card issuer.
- 02
Carry a second card separately from the first.
- 03
Know where official guidance points visitors for international-card ATM access.
- 04
Keep enough yen for a local journey, small purchase or temporary card failure.
What to know
A logo does not guarantee every transaction
The same card may work in a shop and fail on an online booking site or ticket machine. Merchant settings, offline terminals, issuer security and 3-D Secure authentication can affect the result.
What to know
Choose the transaction currency carefully
If a terminal offers to convert the purchase into your home currency, compare the displayed rate and fees with your issuer’s normal foreign-currency terms before accepting.
What to know
Keep issuer access available
Your bank may send a code or request app approval. Make sure you can receive the required authentication abroad without relying on the same data connection that is failing.
If that does not work
Use the fallback.
- Try the second card rather than repeatedly submitting the same transaction.
- Ask whether the merchant accepts cash or another method.
- Call the number on the card through a trusted channel if the issuer has blocked it.
Before you need it
Save this offline.
- Issuer support number
- Last four digits of each card
- Backup authentication method
- Emergency cash location
- Travel insurer contact
