The formal event name is Niihama Taiko Festival, or 新居浜太鼓祭り. Niihama City's 2026 poster confirms Friday, October 16 through Sunday, October 18 for the principal festival. It separately identifies the Ojoin district schedule as Thursday, October 15 through Saturday, October 17. Ehime Prefecture's official tourism listing therefore gives the broader citywide period as October 15–18.
The city festival hub had not published a 2026 Four Days operating pamphlet, district-by-district route sheet, consolidated daily timetable or final tourism-bus parking map when checked on September 10. The detailed PDFs still displayed there are explicitly labeled 2025. Use the new poster only for dates and wait for a dated 2026 operating document before choosing a specific parade road or hour.

Why the festival is worth a Shikoku detour
Niihama City lists 54 taikodai organized across eight districts: Kawanishi, Kawahigashi, Kawahigashi-West, Funaki, Sumino, Izumikawa, Nakahagi and Ojoin. Each float is managed locally, and district committees control routes and kakikurabe displays. This decentralized structure is the heart of the event and the reason a single generic schedule is not enough.
Ehime Tourism describes the decorated floats as about 5.5 meters high and three tonnes, while the city says roughly 150 carriers support each float. In kakikurabe, the wheels are removed and teams coordinate to lift and present their taikodai; the sashiage overhead lift is the visual climax. Gold and silver embroidery, deep drums, whistles and coordinated calls make the festival compelling even without trying to follow every district.

Free viewing and the confirmed paid grandstand
No festival-wide general admission charge, street-viewing ticket or public reservation requirement is announced. Free viewing does not reserve a position or guarantee a particular float. Streets, shrines and display grounds can be controlled at short notice, and a district may redirect spectators for safe movement.
The separate 2026 Ikkunomori grandstand is beside Ichinomiya Shrine and covers the Kawanishi district gathering. On Saturday, October 17, entry starts at 09:00 and the program is scheduled for 10:00–12:00; the price is ¥3,000 per person aged three or older and the allocation is 150. On Sunday, October 18, entry starts at 13:30 and the program is 14:30–16:30; the price is ¥3,500 and the allocation is 100. Children under three may sit on an adult's lap without charge.
Online booking closes September 30, but either session can sell out earlier when its first-come allocation is reached. The product includes the grandstand ticket, a ¥100-area coupon and a souvenir; transport and food are excluded. Exchange the online ticket at the south approach ticket desk on City Hall Street and receive the assigned seat before entering the stand. Live remaining inventory is shown only in the booking engine and was not published as a number when checked September 10.

Cancellation and rain rules are product-specific
The paid grandstand page says the taikodai operate in rain, but the organizing committee may stop operations. If the committee stops the program, prepaid ticket money is refunded in full. Bring a raincoat rather than a large umbrella that obstructs other viewers.
For customer cancellations, the grandstand product charges 100% from ten days before the scheduled session and adds a ¥220 refund fee per person. No refund is offered for arriving too late to view. These terms belong to the paid grandstand; the reviewed sources do not announce one unified 2026 rain, storm, postponement or decision-time rule for all eight festival districts. Follow a newer district or city notice if it conflicts with this guide.

Access: plan for a citywide event, not one pin
JR Niihama Station on the Yosan Line is the most useful public-transport base. Niihama City's normal reference estimates about 1 hour 10 minutes by JR from Matsuyama, 1 hour 20 minutes from Takamatsu and 1 hour 30 minutes from Okayama. Those are planning estimates rather than 2026 festival timetables or guarantees; reserve limited-express travel where required and check the actual October service.
Ehime Tourism says the various venues can be around 30 minutes from Niihama Station by bus or taxi, with festival congestion able to increase that time. Yamane Ground's official district site gives a normal taxi journey of about ten minutes from the station, but its 2026 unified-gathering time and shuttle plan were not yet published. The city page mentions a Niihama Station south-exit shuttle for the Yamane gathering, but does not label that paragraph as a confirmed 2026 timetable, so do not build the trip around the stated hours until a dated update appears.
For the paid Ichinomiya Shrine grandstand, check in at the south approach ticket desk in 1-chome Ichinomiya, Niihama. The product provides controlled parking at Kaneko Elementary School for ticket holders—09:00–15:00 on October 17 and 11:00–18:00 on October 18—but the general Ehime listing otherwise says there is no single festival car park. A ticket-specific parking space is not permission to drive into another district's restricted streets.
What to know
Traffic, crowds and a safe place to stand
Road congestion and traffic controls are expected around kakikurabe venues, but a final 2026 all-city restriction map was not published at review time. Navigation apps can route directly into a controlled area. Park only where the relevant 2026 notice permits, allow for a long walk and protect the final bus or train rather than waiting until the last float movement.
A taikodai's route controllers work at the ends of the long carrying beams and through the crowd to secure its path. Treat their signals as immediate safety instructions. Stay behind ropes and barriers, never stand at the beam ends or between floats, and do not cross because a float appears stationary. Keep children close and leave wheelchairs, strollers and emergency routes more space than an ordinary festival crowd.
Niihama City's promotion committee explicitly works toward an accident-free, peaceful festival. Do not seek an unannounced confrontation, enter a moving route for a photograph or interpret crowd excitement as permission to approach. Kakikurabe is a coordinated lifting display; safe viewing is impressive without physical proximity.

Use the location app carefully
Niihama City links to the Dondoko web app, which is intended to show taikodai locations during the festival. The city warns that the current display is a test environment and may not reflect the real float positions until event-day data is activated.
Use it as a supplementary tool, not a reason to chase a float through closed streets. Save the chosen venue and station route offline, keep enough battery for the return journey and follow physical barriers and staff over any map pin.
What to know
Photography and what to confirm before going
No complete 2026 festival-wide policy for flash, tripods, drones, commercial filming or live streaming was published in the reviewed sources. Keep equipment out of carrying routes and sightlines, do not use flash in a carrier's face and ask before close portraits. A drone requires explicit current authorization; the absence of a public rule is not permission.
Before departure, confirm the 2026 district timetable, road-control map, chosen kakikurabe venue and time, station shuttle or bus, paid-seat inventory if relevant, same-day weather decision and last return.
