Do this now

Follow these steps in order.

  1. 01

Choose an ordinary exhibition night for a quieter street or October 11 for the lighting ceremony and October 17 for the special display and pedestrian-only program.

  2. 02

Use Nagaragawa Railway to Mino-shi Station and walk about 15 minutes. Check the final connection back through Mino-Ota because the exhibition ends at 21:00.

  3. 03

If driving on October 17, bring ¥1,000 cash for the temporary lot and reach the return shuttle before its 21:30 final departure; do not rely on that lot or shuttle if rain is forecast.

  4. 04

Check the organizer's latest notice and JMA forecast before leaving because outdoor music, float display and the temporary parking plan use separate rain rules.

  5. 05

Photograph without touching the paper artworks, blocking the narrow historic street or placing a tripod in the walking flow.

What to know

Formal name, dates, hours and two display phases

The formal event is the 33rd Mino Washi Akari Art Exhibition, or 第33回美濃和紙あかりアート展. It takes place in the Udatsu Wall Historical District of Mino City, Gifu Prefecture. The official 2026 schedule divides the exhibition into Phase 1 from Sunday, October 11 through Friday, October 23 and Phase 2 from Saturday, October 24 through Monday, November 30.

The artworks are illuminated daily from 17:00 to 21:00 in both phases. The organizer's competition information says all submitted works are shown during Phase 1; visitors going later should check the current official display map rather than assuming every work remains in the same place throughout Phase 2.

This is an outdoor evening art walk through a preserved merchant district, not a single museum with timed entry. Arrive before dark to orient yourself, then allow at least an hour after the lights come on. Individual shops, related exhibitions and workshops use their own daytime hours and closing days.

What to know

October 11 opening night and October 17 special program

On October 11, the official opening program is centered on Ipponmatsu Square. Mino Wa Wind Orchestra is scheduled from 16:20, subject to rain cancellation; the lighting ceremony begins at 17:00 and the local Mino Nagashi Niwaka performance follows from 17:30. Other artworks are expected to light at about 17:00 as usual.

October 17 is the designated special-display and pedestrian-only day. The official program lists free stage performances from 15:00, an 18:00 award ceremony that the public may observe, an all-day upper-prize display at Yoshida Workshop from 09:00 to 21:00, a student activity and rest space from 17:00 to 21:00, food stalls and a night market from 15:00 to 21:00.

Some October 17 items are explicitly weather-dependent. The wind ensemble, dance performance and Tokiwa-cho float display are cancelled in rain, while the stage location can move. Check the dated organizer notice again on the day; a listing here is not a guarantee that every performance proceeds.

What to know

Admission, tickets, reservations and capacity

General viewing of the Mino Washi Akari Art Exhibition is free. The reviewed organizer pages publish no admission ticket, timed-entry reservation, booking deadline, paid viewing stand or event-wide sellout condition for the illuminated street or the October 17 special display.

Free entry does not guarantee a clear photograph, a seat at a related activity or immediate access to a narrow section when it is crowded. Staff may redirect pedestrians or hold a crossing to protect artworks and emergency access. Paid workshops, shop purchases and unrelated partner events have separate prices and booking rules.

One related October 11 straw-turtle workshop is marked advance-reservation only, but the organizer directs visitors to the provider for its current details. Do not confuse that workshop booking with entry to the main light exhibition, which remains free.

What to know

Train access from Gifu and the last-connection decision

Mino-shi Station on the Nagaragawa Railway is the nearest practical rail stop listed by the organizer, about a 15-minute walk from the historic district. From JR Gifu, take the JR Takayama Main Line to Mino-Ota, then transfer to the Nagaragawa Railway for Mino-shi. The organizer gives typical journey segments of about 40 minutes to Mino-Ota and about 30 minutes onward, before transfer and waiting time.

The exhibition ends at 21:00, but the final useful rural-rail connection can be earlier than a city visitor expects and may not line up with an onward limited-express or Shinkansen. Check the current operator timetable for your exact date, identify the last two workable departures and leave the far end of the display early enough to walk back to the station.

From Nagoya, the official access page also lists a highway bus to Chuno Government Office taking about 90 minutes, followed by a roughly 40-minute walk. That is a long after-dark transfer; verify the return timetable and stop location before choosing it over rail.

What to know

Parking, October 17 shuttle and traffic controls

On ordinary days, the organizer lists the Kanko Fureai Hiroba municipal car park about five minutes on foot from the district. Its published fee is the first 30 minutes free and then ¥100 per two hours. Availability is not guaranteed, and normal access arrangements do not override October 17 restrictions.

For October 17, the official temporary lot is Daiyama Hirock, with capacity stated as approximately 700 vehicles. It operates from 15:00 to 22:00 and asks for a ¥1,000 cash cooperation fee on arrival, including motorcycles. A shuttle links that lot with Kanko Fureai Hiroba about every 20 minutes from 15:00 to 21:30; the final bus back to Daiyama Hirock is 21:30.

The temporary lot cannot be used in rain and the shuttle is then cancelled. Capacity is also limited, and wheelchairs cannot be carried on the shuttle without prior consultation for a safer arrangement. The city confirms October 17 traffic restrictions, so recheck the final map and do not copy a previous year's road plan or park on private property.

What to know

Rain, crowds and protecting the artworks

The organizer says artworks are displayed without protective cases on the fine-weather pedestrian-only day but remain inside cases in rain. That means rain does not automatically cancel the illuminated exhibition. Outdoor performances, the traditional float display, the temporary parking lot and its shuttle can still be cancelled separately.

Bring compact rainwear rather than opening a large umbrella beside fragile paper art or in a narrow crowd. Never touch, lean over or move an artwork or its case. Keep children beside an adult and follow any one-way instruction around cables, display bases and historic building entrances.

October 17 is explicitly expected to be crowded. Arrive before the 17:00 lighting period if a priority performance matters, choose a meeting point away from the densest section and keep the 21:30 final shuttle or last train in view. Free viewing is not a reason to stop in the center of the walking lane for a long exposure.

What to know

Photography and the final visit checklist

No single 2026 visitor rule for tripods, flash, commercial filming or personal drones is published on the reviewed event pages. Use handheld equipment where possible, keep any support entirely outside the walking flow, avoid identifiable close portraits without permission and obey staff or property signs. Do not fly a drone over the street crowd or historic district without the required permissions.

Before departure, confirm the current display phase, 17:00–21:00 lighting, any dated weather change, the Mino-shi Station timetable, the October 17 road and shuttle plan if relevant, and the last workable return. Save the Japanese title and a map offline because mobile service and battery life are not substitutes for a rural evening exit plan.

The thumbnail on this page is a generated editorial image inspired by a washi light-art walk in a historic Japanese street. It is not documentary photography of the 2026 exhibition and must not be used as evidence of the actual artworks, buildings, foliage, crowd, weather or layout.

If that does not work

Use the fallback.

  • The October 17 temporary lot or shuttle is cancelled by rain: use rail or an ordinary municipal lot only if current official access permits it; do not improvise roadside parking.
  • The street becomes crowded: move to a quieter section and return later rather than stopping an emergency or pedestrian lane.
  • An outdoor performance is cancelled: continue only with the illuminated exhibition areas the organizer says remain open.
  • The last comfortable train margin is disappearing: leave the display early; a taxi or late rural connection is not guaranteed.
  • A related workshop is full: enjoy the free main exhibition and do not assume a general event ticket creates workshop access.

Before you need it

Save this offline.

  • October 11–23 and October 24–November 30 phases
  • 17:00–21:00 daily lighting window
  • Mino-shi Station walking route and last two return trains
  • October 17 traffic map, temporary lot and 21:30 final shuttle if relevant
  • Current organizer weather notice and JMA forecast
  • Compact rainwear, portable battery and accommodation address
  • Japanese event name: 第33回美濃和紙あかりアート展
