What to know
Formal name, dates and the nine-night rule
The formal event is Matsue Suitoro 2026, written 松江水燈路 in Japanese. It is an autumn evening illumination organized around Matsue Castle, the Karakoro area and Kishi Park by the Matsue Light-up Caravan Executive Committee and Matsue Tourism Association. Paper andon lanterns are placed along the castle moat, stone walls and nearby streets; they are displayed beside the route rather than released to float on the water.
The 2026 lighting runs from 18:00 to 21:00 on Saturday and Sunday, September 26–27; Saturday and Sunday, October 3–4; Saturday through Monday public holiday, October 10–12; and Saturday and Sunday, October 17–18. That is nine nights, not a continuous September 26–October 18 run. Do not arrive on a weekday such as October 6 expecting the main lantern route to operate.
The core event hours are official, but a particular performance, food stall or indoor attraction can use a shorter schedule. Save the date-specific program rather than treating 21:00 as every activity's closing time.

What is included and what needs a separate ticket
The official 2026 event and tourism pages advertise no general admission ticket, outdoor-route reservation, booking deadline or paid spectator allocation. Plan the lantern walk as an open public event, while understanding that staff may still redirect visitors or close a congested section for safety. Food, drinks, workshops, cruises and other individually operated activities can charge separately.
Matsue Castle tower is not included in an event ticket. The castle's current official guide lists adult admission at ¥1,200 and free admission for elementary and junior-high students from July 1, 2026. Its normal hours do not automatically prove that the keep will remain open throughout every Suitoro night: the organizer's dedicated night-opening page was still labeled for the completed 2025 event when this guide was reviewed on September 15.
Final 2026 castle night-entry hours, last admission and any combination ticket were therefore not confirmed in the current event pages. If entering the keep matters, check the castle and Suitoro sites again before paying for transport. Outdoor viewing does not guarantee access to a paid or capacity-limited indoor space.
What to know
Free shuttle from JR Matsue Station
The official 2026 access page lists a free shuttle from JR Matsue Station South Exit, at the stop beside Matsue Universal Hotel. Departures are 17:20, 18:20, 19:10 and 20:25. The first three call at Matsue Shinjiko Onsen at 17:35, 18:30 and 19:20 before reaching Otemae at 17:50, 18:40 and 19:30. The 20:25 train-station departure runs directly to Otemae for a scheduled 20:35 arrival.
Return buses leave Otemae for JR Matsue Station at 18:00, 18:50, 20:00 and 20:45. The 20:00 and 20:45 departures call at Matsue Shinjiko Onsen and are scheduled to reach JR Matsue at 20:20 and 21:05. The 20:45 departure is the published final return; waiting until the 21:00 lighting finish would miss it.
Bus times are a plan, not a connection guarantee. Crowds and road controls can delay movement, and boarding capacity or queue rules are not published as a reservation system. Arrive early, keep taxi or walking directions offline and protect any onward train with a wide margin.
What to know
Venue, nearest stops and walking plan
Otemae is the most useful shuttle stop for Matsue Castle. The outdoor route extends beyond one gate, so open the official map and choose whether your priority is the castle grounds, the Karakoro streets or the Kishi Park and Yomegashima view. Allow extra time for dark paths, crossings and one-way pedestrian guidance.
JR Matsue Station is the main intercity rail gateway. Under normal service, the official Matsue tourism listing also describes a roughly ten-minute Lake Line bus ride to the National Treasure Matsue Castle Otemae stop, followed by about a two-minute walk. Event-day controls can alter the normal bus route, so prefer the dedicated free shuttle when its timetable fits.
Matsue Shinjiko Onsen is useful for travelers staying by Lake Shinji or arriving on Ichibata Railway. The free shuttle calls there on most trips. Large luggage should remain at your accommodation or a confirmed station facility; the public route has no announced general cloakroom.

Opening night and date-specific programs
The official program lists a brief opening ceremony at Matsue Castle Umadomari from 18:00 to 18:10 on September 26. A separate Yomegashima Suitoro lighting is scheduled at Kishi Park from 18:30 to 20:00 that night, and a kagura performance is listed on the Matsue History Museum veranda from 18:30 to 20:00.
Other activities vary by date. The official program includes a tea fair on September 26–27, music and dance, and separately operated experiences such as a ghost-story cruise on selected nights. A program appearing on the same website does not mean it shares the lantern walk's free, walk-in conditions: check the individual listing for price, age, capacity, reservation deadline and sellout status.
No single 2026 timetable promises that every lantern, stall or performance runs on all nine nights. If one activity is the reason for your trip, capture its current official page and reconfirm on the day rather than relying on the overall 18:00–21:00 window.
What to know
Traffic restrictions, parking and crowd strategy
The organizer announces event-area traffic controls from 17:50 to 21:20 on weekends and public holidays and links an official map. Exact controlled roads and approaches should be read from that current map. A navigation app may continue to offer a route through a closure, and a taxi may have to stop outside the controlled area.
The official access page lists several hospitality parking areas, but availability can change by date and capacity is not guaranteed. It also lists nearby commercial car parks with separate charges. There is no published parking reservation or sellout system for the event itself, so rail, normal transit and the free shuttle are the lower-risk plan.
For a quieter walk, avoid building the whole visit around the opening ceremony or a single performance start. Keep to the side when stopping for photographs, leave bridge approaches and tactile paving open, and choose a meeting point outside the narrowest illuminated section.
What to know
Rain, severe weather and night photography
The official 2026 pages reviewed September 15 do not publish one event-wide rain-or-shine rule, severe-weather threshold, postponement date, cancellation decision time or refund policy covering all nine nights and every separate activity. Lanterns, cruises, outdoor performances and indoor facilities can make different decisions. Check Suitoro's latest notice and JMA warnings before traveling.
Carry compact rainwear rather than opening a large umbrella in a narrow viewing line. Paths beside the moat and stone walls can be dark or slippery, so wear closed shoes, watch changes in level and keep children away from the water's edge. Do not place a tripod across a walking route.
No event-wide 2026 tripod, drone or commercial-filming policy is published in the reviewed pages. Follow posted site rules and staff instructions, avoid flash or bright video lights near performers and other visitors, and remember that castle grounds can impose their own restrictions. First confirm that your date is one of the nine lighting nights and that the official home page still shows 18:00–21:00. Then check the date-specific program, traffic map, shuttle timetable and any paid activity page. If you plan to enter Matsue Castle tower, verify the 2026 event-night hours and last admission separately.
Finally check the latest weather warning, train and local-bus status, and the final return from Otemae. Bring a charged phone, portable battery, a saved venue map and enough payment flexibility for separately charged facilities or stalls. Unannounced details should remain a reason to verify, not a reason to copy a previous year's rule.
If that does not work
Use the fallback.
- You arrive on a non-lighting date: use Matsue Castle's current daytime hours and choose another official Matsue evening activity instead of assuming the route will be lit.
- The free shuttle queue is full or delayed: use the official normal bus information, walk only on a safe confirmed route, or take a taxi from outside the controlled streets.
- You miss the 20:45 final shuttle: use a saved normal-transit or taxi fallback; do not wait at Otemae for an unlisted extra bus.
- Matsue Castle night entry is not operating: enjoy the outdoor route and do not treat an old night-opening page as a valid 2026 ticket promise.
- Rain or wind cancels one activity: follow its operator's latest notice; the absence of a blanket event rule does not mean every program continues.
