Official 2026 dates, hours and scale

The formal event is the 35th Jozenji Streetjazz Festival. It runs Saturday, September 12 and Sunday, September 13, 2026 at approximately 50 stages across central Sendai, including Jozenji-dori and nearby parks, squares and indoor venues. Sendai Tourism lists overall hours of 11:00–20:00; the performer information gives the core stage window as 11:00–17:30 and notes that some stages continue until 20:00. Always use the time shown for the individual stage.

The organizer's September 10 announcement says about 870 groups are appearing, alongside 15 tie-up stages run with partner venues. The 35th-anniversary site also describes roughly 60 food and drink vendors. That scale makes the event a city walk with many small performances, not a single reserved-seat show with one entrance.

How to use the official map and timetable

Open the official 35th-anniversary site and select the map or timetable. Search by stage, performer or time, then save favorites in your browser before the mobile network becomes busy. The tool is the current source for individual performance slots; a general 11:00 start does not mean every stage begins at exactly that time.

Build a compact route around one zone first. Jozenji-dori, Kotodai Park, Nishikicho Park and the Sendai Mediatheque area are walkable, but crossings, crowds and stage turnover make back-to-back performances at opposite ends risky. Take a screenshot of the selected slots and venue pins because the interactive page requires a working connection and its interface is primarily Japanese.

Admission, reservations and the Mediatheque sellout rule

General admission to ordinary festival stages is free, with no single festival-wide reservation deadline or sellout gate. Outdoor audiences may be standing or using whatever seating the stage provides. Fifteen tie-up stages can have their own conditions, so check the linked host information before assuming every partner program is walk-in.

Sendai Mediatheque is the major exception. Admission is free, but a separate numbered Peatix ticket is required for each performance slot and the room is cleared completely between performances. Advance tickets end when the allocation for that slot reaches capacity. A reservation does not cover the whole day or the next act.

The organizer says a Mediatheque ticket becomes invalid 15 minutes after the performance starts. If space remains after checking reservations and venue conditions, same-day tickets may be issued from 30 minutes before a performance; this is a possibility, not guaranteed inventory. The official notice does not publish one overall final booking deadline beyond capacity and the slot schedule.

Nearest station and access from Sendai Station

For the central Jozenji-dori stages, take the Sendai Subway Namboku Line from Sendai Station to Kotodai-Koen Station. The main festival area begins immediately around the station exits. Walking from Sendai Station is also possible, but the route becomes part of the crowded event area and is less useful if you are carrying luggage.

Leave suitcases at your hotel or a confirmed locker before entering the stage circuit. There is no single festival entrance or cloakroom serving all 50 venues. Sendai Mediatheque lies west of Kotodai Park along Jozenji-dori; verify the exact stage pin rather than treating the building and street stages as one queue.

The Jazzutto festival bus: fare and useful departures

Miyagi Kotsu operates the Machinori Jazzutto:2 circuit on both festival days from Sendai Station west exit bus stop 3. Regular circuit departures are published for 10:30, 11:00, 11:40, 12:10, 13:40, 14:00, 14:40, 15:10, 15:40, 16:10, 17:30 and 17:50. Express departures at 18:40 and 19:10 link Sendai Station and Nishi Park without the full daytime loop.

The fare is ¥200 for an adult and ¥100 for a child per ride. Cash and transit IC cards are accepted, along with the eligible day passes listed by the operator. The 120-yen pack tickets, Sendai Bus Free Plus and ordinary commuter pass are not valid. The official visitor feature says no reservation is required, so board in line and allow for capacity and traffic delays.

The regular loop serves Nishikicho Park, Jozenji City Hall, Nishi Park, the International Center, Ryokusaikan, Aoba-dori Ichibancho and Aoba-dori before returning to the station. It is useful for linking widely spaced stages, but walking or subway may be faster for a tight schedule in the Jozenji-dori core.

Road closures and public-transport changes

Festival road restrictions apply on both September 12 and 13 from 11:00 to 21:00. The official notice closes the eastbound, north-side lane of Jozenji-dori between Bansui-dori and Higashi-Nibancho-dori, plus Tsunagi Yokocho beside the former civic square. Follow police and event staff because temporary controls can affect crossings and drop-off points.

Sendai City Transportation Bureau says 356 city-bus trips are affected across the weekend—180 on Saturday and 176 on Sunday—and 52 Loople Sendai trips are affected, 26 each day. Loople diversions apply from 09:45 to 16:00. Do not navigate to a usual surface-bus stop from an old map; open the operator's festival notice and current timetable immediately before boarding.

Rain, severe weather and what remains unannounced

The core festival is officially held in rain. Bring a compact raincoat instead of opening a large umbrella in a dense audience, protect your phone and keep performance and emergency paths clear. Wet weather can still change comfort, sound equipment and crowd movement even when the event continues.

Not every special program uses the same rule: the separately announced Swing Carnival is cancelled in rain. A single 2026 decision time, threshold or replacement plan for typhoon-level or other severe weather was not published in the official pages reviewed on September 12. Check the festival news page and each tie-up venue before leaving rather than extending the general rain-or-shine statement to every activity.

Crowd, accessibility and photography plan

Expect the densest foot traffic on Jozenji-dori, at popular late-afternoon sets and around the Mediatheque turnover. Choose a meeting point away from a stage, keep children and companions together, and do not stop in a crossing to film. Visitors who need a seated or step-free experience should inspect the venue details and contact the organizer or indoor venue directly; one accessibility setup is not published for all 50 stages.
