Yamagata Imoni Festival 2026: Bowl Tickets, Seats and Access

What to know

Formal name, date, venue and times

The formal 2026 event is Yamagata Meibutsu Dai 38-kai Nihon-ichi no Imoni-kai Festival, or Yamagata Specialty 38th Japan's Biggest Imoni Festival. It takes place on Sunday, September 20 at the Mamigasaki River riverbank near Sotsuki Bridge in Yamagata City. The giant 6.5-metre Nabutaro III cauldron is scheduled to prepare roughly 30,000 servings of Yamagata-style beef-and-soy-sauce imoni.

Same-day distribution tickets begin at 08:30 and bowls begin serving at 09:20. Both continue only while their allocation remains. The organizer-linked advance ticket page lists the event window as 08:30–16:00, but 16:00 is not a promise that bowls will remain available until then. Arriving late can mean seeing the venue after serving has ended.

The riverbank also has sponsor and local-food booths and a stage program. Those activities do not share one guaranteed closing time, price or capacity. Treat the bowl, paid tent and other stalls as separate decisions rather than one all-inclusive admission.

Regular imoni bowl: advance and same-day tickets

A regular bowl is distributed through an advance QR ticket or a same-day numbered ticket. The organizer says an advance reservation required a sponsorship of at least ¥600 per ticket. That advance sale ended Saturday, September 19 at 18:00; travelers without a valid QR ticket must use the same-day numbered-ticket system.

For a same-day bowl, contribute at least ¥700 or exchange one eligible sponsor ticket. Numbered-ticket distribution begins at 08:30 and ends when the allocation is gone. Serving begins at 09:20. One numbered ticket covers one bowl; a general visit to the riverbank does not itself guarantee food.

The advance product is framed as a sponsorship and says it is non-refundable. Save the QR code offline and go directly to the selected pickup gate in the booked time window. The final booking screen, time slot and receipt are the controlling terms; do not rely on a search result or screenshot that does not show your reservation.

What to know

Imoni Chaya paid seats: advance sales have closed

Imoni Chaya is a separate reserved tent with seating, premium imoni, one special menu item, rice ball and water. The adult price is ¥4,500 and the child price is ¥2,200. Infants may enter free only when they do not use a seat. The morning session is 10:00–11:30 with entry from 09:30; the afternoon session is 13:00–14:30 with entry from 12:30.

Advance sales closed Thursday, September 17 at 22:00. The organizer's September 14 notice said 38 morning tickets remained at that point and the afternoon had more availability, but that was historical inventory before the deadline. The reviewed official pages do not announce general on-site Chaya sales after advance booking closed.

A morning ticket cannot be used for the afternoon session or vice versa. The venue is cleared between sessions, and food must be finished by the session end. Pets are not admitted. Separate booking fees can apply depending on payment and collection method.

What to know

Access from Yamagata Station

JR Yamagata Station is the main rail gateway, but the riverbank is not beside the station. The official access guide directs outbound visitors to the Numanobe-bound Yamako Bus from Yamagata Station East Exit, alighting at Yamagata Fire Station. The published one-way adult fare is ¥280. Allow for crowd-day delays and verify the actual stop and departure in the operator display.

For the return, the official page lists buses from Yamagata Fire Station to Yamagata Station East Exit for ¥280 or to the west side through the Kaminoyama Onsen Takamatsubayama service for ¥300. These are normal route descriptions, not a guaranteed connection after every program. Protect an onward Shinkansen with a wide margin.

Walking the entire route from Yamagata Station with luggage is a poor default. Leave large bags at accommodation or a confirmed station facility and save the bus stop, hotel and taxi fallback offline before joining the riverbank crowd.

What to know

Shuttles, parking and traffic restrictions

There is no visitor parking at the festival riverbank. Drivers must use designated sites at Yamagata Prefectural Government or Yamagata City Public Wholesale Market, then take the official shuttle. The page lists about 800 and 500 parking spaces respectively, but neither site is reservable and both can fill.

Paid shuttles run repeatedly from those two sites between 08:00 and 16:00, approximately every five minutes under normal conditions. The one-way sponsorship fare is ¥300 for high-school age and older, ¥100 for elementary and junior-high students, and free for preschool children. Payment is cash only. A separate free shuttle runs from the Yamagata Chamber of Commerce and Industry parking area, where visitors are directed to nearby paid city parking.

Roads close around the venue and a navigation app may still route a car into a controlled approach. Motorcycles are not admitted to the riverbank. Bicycle areas are provided on the riverbank, but follow signs and do not assume the same route or parking rules as cars.

What to know

Rain, severe weather and refunds

The organizer states that the festival proceeds in rain but may be cancelled in severe weather. No postponement date is announced. Check the official homepage and social updates with JMA warnings before boarding for Yamagata, especially if heavy rain raises the river or wind affects temporary structures.

The regular advance bowl product describes the payment as a sponsorship and says refunds are not available. The paid Imoni Chaya terms say that if the whole event is cancelled, visitors should follow the organizer's refund announcement; ticket and payment fees can be excluded, and no refund is made when cancellation occurs after the event has started.

Bring compact rainwear rather than a wide umbrella in the food queue, closed shoes for uneven or muddy ground, and sun protection even on a cool morning. Weather rules for another festival or a previous year do not override the current organizer notice.

Crowds, food safety and photography

The 30,000-serving scale concentrates people at ticket distribution, pickup gates, shuttles and the giant cauldron. Follow the time window on an advance ticket, keep exit lanes clear and agree on a meeting point away from the serving queue. Children should remain beside an adult around hot food, heavy equipment and riverbank edges.

The organizer uses dedicated equipment and controlled preparation procedures. Visitors must remain behind barriers and never touch cooking tools, lean over the cauldron or enter staff areas for a photograph. The official access page prohibits drones and other unmanned aircraft around the venue.

No single 2026 event-wide rule for tripods, livestreaming or commercial filming is published in the reviewed visitor pages. Obey signs and staff, do not block the queue and ask the organizer before monetized production. First open the organizer's event guide and the correct ticket product. If you already hold an advance bowl or Chaya ticket, confirm its exact QR, time, entry and cancellation terms. If relying on same-day distribution, arrive for the 08:30 start and accept that a bowl is not guaranteed.

Then check JMA warnings, JR and local-bus status, the official access page and the final return plan. Save the venue map and ticket offline, carry cash for the shuttle and same-day sponsorship, and bring a portable battery. Any changed or unannounced item should be resolved from the current official page rather than inferred.
