Formal name, dates, hours and venues

The formal event is the 66th Toyama Festival, or Dai 66-kai Toyama Matsuri. It takes place Saturday, September 26 from 11:00 to 21:00 and Sunday, September 27 from 09:00 to 21:00 in central Toyama. The principal outdoor venues are Toyama Castle Park and Johshi Avenue, with programs also at Grand Plaza, Toyama Prefectural Civic Center and Toyama International Conference Center.

Those overall hours are a planning frame, not the running time of every activity. Yosakoi begins at 11:00 on Saturday and 10:00 on Sunday, while the Sunday tug-of-war starts at 09:00. Family activities generally end by 17:00 or earlier, and the working-vehicle display runs only from 12:00 to 15:00 on Sunday.

The organizer states that content may change or be cancelled because of conditions and that the published schedule was current on September 10. Reopen the official news panel rather than relying on a saved social post on the morning of the event.

Choose between Yosakoi, Owara and the family program

The 26th Toyama Yosakoi Festival is the largest continuous program. The official page plans 69 teams and about 3,100 performers across the Castle Park stage, Johshi Avenue and other central sites. It runs 11:00–21:00 on September 26 and 10:00–21:00 on September 27. A team and performance timetable belongs to the dedicated Yosakoi organizer and can change independently of the city festival overview.

The 31st 2026 Etchu Owara Folk Song National Contest is indoors at Toyama Prefectural Civic Center from 13:00 to 17:00 on Saturday. It combines competitive singing with performances by past winners and folk groups. The police band and drill event is also Saturday, 13:30–15:30, but its 2026 venue is Toyama International Conference Center—not the Aubade Hall used in previous years.

Sunday adds the company tug-of-war at Grand Plaza from 09:00 to 12:00, about 20 working vehicles on Johshi Avenue from 12:00 to 15:00 and Wakato traditional ladder, matoi and kiyari skills from 13:00 to 14:00. Build a route around one or two priorities; the venues are close, but crossing and viewing access can pause during road events.

Admission, reservations, capacity and sellouts

The official event page lists admission as free. It does not publish a general spectator ticket, advance reservation, booking deadline, reserved viewing product or festival-wide sellout condition. Outdoor viewing remains subject to barriers, staff instructions and safe capacity, so free entry does not guarantee a front-row position or immediate access to a crowded indoor hall.

The official pamphlet marks the Sunday tree-climbing activity as same-day reservation only and says sandals and skirts are not permitted for it. The registration start time, participant limit and sold-out condition are not published in the reviewed text; ask at the Kids Park activity desk and expect the allocation to end when full.

Food, drinks and other purchases at the Hoshizora Bazaar are paid separately. The organizer does not publish one event-wide payment-method list, price table or allergen guide. Check the individual stall before ordering and keep a cash fallback rather than assuming every temporary seller accepts an overseas card.

Nearest station and access from the Hokuriku route

Toyama Station is the main intercity gateway, served by the Hokuriku Shinkansen, Ainokaze Toyama Railway and local rail services. The organizer places the main Castle Park area about a ten-minute walk from the station's south side under normal conditions.

For a shorter approach, take the Toyama city tram loop line from Toyama Station to Kokusai-kaigijo-mae. The official event page estimates about six minutes on the tram and a two-minute walk from that stop to the main area. Confirm the actual platform, service and fare in the operator display because a festival summary is not a live timetable.

Leave large luggage at accommodation or a confirmed station facility. A suitcase is difficult in Yosakoi crowds and can block a viewing lane, tram aisle or temporary bus stop. Protect an onward Shinkansen with extra time after the 21:00 program rather than assuming a fast walk through the dispersing crowd.

What to know

Road closures, temporary bus stops and parking

Johshi Avenue and surrounding roads have vehicle restrictions from 11:30 to 21:30 on Saturday and 11:30 to 18:30 on Sunday. During those windows, the Johshi Koen-mae and Shiyakusho-mae bus stops cannot be used and temporary stops are installed. The pamphlet warns that temporary-stop arrangements may still change, so use Toyama Chihou Railway's current notice for the exact bus you need.

Toyama Municipal Castle Park Parking cannot be entered or exited during the same closure periods. Other mapped car parks are independent paid facilities and may fill. The official advice is to use public transport; do not treat a parking symbol on the festival map as a reservation or guaranteed space.

A navigation app may continue to suggest a normal route after barriers go up. Follow police and staff, never stop in a bus relocation zone, and do not use a hotel, shop or residential entrance as festival parking. If arriving by taxi, agree on a legal pickup point outside the controlled streets.

What to know

Rain and severe-weather rules differ by program

Toyama Yosakoi is scheduled to proceed in rain as a rule. The Owara folk-song contest, tug-of-war and police band event are indoors and are listed as taking place regardless of weather. The Hoshizora Bazaar is also marked rain or shine.

The Kids Park, working-vehicle display and Wakato traditional performance may change or be cancelled depending on conditions. The organizer also reserves the right to alter or cancel festival content overall. No festival-wide postponement date, severe-weather decision time or universal ticket refund rule is published because general admission is free and each activity has its own conditions.

Check JMA warnings and the official news panel before travel. Bring compact rainwear rather than opening a large umbrella beside a performance route, and move indoors or leave if staff suspend an outdoor program. Typhoon disruption to a rail line can matter even when one indoor stage remains open.

Crowds, drones, photography and respectful viewing

Keep the Johshi Avenue performance corridor, emergency routes, tactile paving and shop entrances clear. Do not step into the road for a low-angle photograph or follow a team through a controlled crossing. Ask before making an identifiable close portrait, especially of children, and keep tripods out of busy public lanes unless staff expressly permit them.

The official traffic pamphlet says unmanned aircraft, including drones and radio-controlled aircraft, are prohibited around the venue unless the necessary national permission has been obtained. That is not a practical invitation for an ordinary visitor to fly; contact the organizer and authorities before any professional aerial plan.

Confirm the tram or walking route, the return service, any temporary bus stop, JMA warnings and the program-specific rain notice. Details that remain unpublished—such as tree-climbing capacity, a universal indoor-entry limit or one event-wide payment list—should be treated as unannounced, not guessed from a previous year.
