JR Central identifies the Limited Express Hida from Nagoya as the direct rail route and gives an approximate journey of 2 hours 20 minutes. A limited express requires the appropriate basic fare and limited-express ticket; check the dated timetable and current train status rather than relying on that planning estimate.
From Tokyo, Kyoto or Osaka, the common rail plan is Tokaido Shinkansen to Nagoya, then Limited Express Hida to Takayama. From Kanazawa or Toyama, compare the current JR and highway-bus routes for the exact date.
