Monkey Kart’s Asakusa route connects two versions of eastern Tokyo in a short public-road drive. Tokyo Skytree and the low-rise streets of Sumida lead toward Senso-ji and old Asakusa, while Ryogoku adds the sumo district and Akihabara supplies the neon, electronics and anime skyline.

That contrast is the reason to book. It is not a conventional guided walking tour, and the hour is not designed for entering temples, shopping in Akihabara or visiting the sumo arena. You are controlling a small road vehicle while following a guide, so most landmarks are drive-by views.

Travelers who want commentary, photographs and time inside each district should visit those areas separately. Treat the kart tour as an activity with a Tokyo backdrop, not as a replacement for an Asakusa sightseeing day.

The route descriptions do not fully agree

The operator’s official Asakusa route page names Tokyo Skytree, Senso-ji, Akihabara and Ryogoku Kokugikan. Klook’s detailed activity section names those areas and adds Ueno.

A separate Klook highlight says the drive passes Tokyo Skytree, Asakusa Shrine and Ginza. Ginza is not included in the same page’s detailed route list, and the operator’s Asakusa route page does not establish it as part of this route.

Do not buy this activity specifically for Ginza. Use the detailed itinerary, final voucher and a written operator confirmation for any landmark that is essential to you. Traffic control, weather, roadworks and operational decisions can also change a public-road sequence on the day.

The meeting point is in Sumida, not beside Senso-ji

The operator lists its Asakusa Route shop at 4-9-9 Yokokawa, Sumida City, Tokyo 130-0003. The location is on the Tokyo Skytree side of the river and should not be confused with central Asakusa around Kaminarimon.

Save the full address and Japanese map pin from the final voucher. Search results for “Monkey Kart Tokyo” can show other branches, while “Asakusa” can lead a visitor to Asakusa Station or Senso-ji rather than the shop.

Check the voucher’s required arrival time and allow extra time for station exits, document review, changing clothes and the safety briefing. If the operator cannot accept your documents or you arrive too late for the group departure, the one-hour tour cannot simply wait without affecting every other driver.

Most visitors need three original documents

For the standard international-permit route, the practical set is your original national driving licence, an original paper International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention and your passport. The operator and Klook both emphasize a hard-copy permit.

Japan does not recognize an IDP merely because it says “international.” The Tokyo Metropolitan Police states that only permits issued in conformity with the 1949 Geneva Convention are valid; a permit under the 1968 Vienna Convention is invalid in Japan.

The legal driving period is also limited by the permit’s issue date and your entry into Japan, with additional rules for some residents and re-entry cases. A platform confirmation does not override Japanese law or the operator’s document check.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police lists Belgium, Estonia, France, Germany, Monaco, Slovenia, Switzerland and Taiwan as jurisdictions whose valid licences may be used with an authorized Japanese translation, subject to the legal conditions. Monkey Kart’s own driver-licence page does not present every current jurisdiction as clearly as the police page. Where the operator page and the current government rule differ, obtain written approval from the operator before paying, and carry the government-compliant originals on the day.

Country examples for the main English-speaking audience

A traveler from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada or Australia will usually use the 1949 Geneva IDP route rather than the Japanese-translation route. The permit must be obtained through the authorized issuer for the relevant country or region before travel; Japan does not issue a foreign visitor’s IDP after arrival.

Do not assume that an automobile-club card, app-based “international licence,” unofficial translation or plastic permit sold online is valid. Compare the physical document with the police guidance and ask the tour operator to approve it in writing.

Licence rules depend on the issuing jurisdiction and the traveler’s status, not nationality alone. Someone who lives in a different country from their passport country should check the authority that issued the licence and permit.

This is real traffic, not a closed circuit

The karts travel on public streets with taxis, buses, bicycles, pedestrians and delivery vehicles. A guide leads the group, but each participant remains the driver of a road vehicle and must react safely to traffic lights, lane changes and unexpected road users.

JAF’s official traffic guide says drivers keep left, yield to pedestrians, do not drive under the influence of alcohol and must not use a mobile phone while driving. Those rules matter more than keeping the group together or getting a photograph.

Do not drive after alcohol, recreational drugs or medication that impairs alertness. Keep both hands available, follow the briefing and leave the photography to staff when promised. If open traffic, low seating or close vehicles cause anxiety, choose a passenger tour instead.

Costumes and photographs are secondary

The current Klook page markets costume selection and says staff take photographs that are sent after the activity. It does not guarantee a specific character costume, number of images, print, camera style or delivery time in the visible product summary.

Choose a costume that does not obstruct your sight, hands, pedals or ability to hear instructions. Avoid loose fabric that could move near the wheels or controls, and use any eye protection or safety equipment the operator requires.

Creators should not hold a phone, action camera or selfie stick while driving. Ask in advance about body-mounted cameras, commercial filming, music, faces of other participants and how image files are delivered. A tour booking is not automatic permission for a sponsored production.

Who should choose another Tokyo activity

Skip this tour if any driver cannot obtain clearly valid original documents, is not confident in left-side urban traffic, cannot understand the safety briefing or needs a fully accessible passenger experience.

It is also a poor fit for travelers who want guaranteed stops at every landmark, children who cannot legally drive, groups with mixed licence eligibility or creators needing to operate a camera continuously.

A private car tour, taxi, river cruise, open-top bus or guided walk can show Tokyo without making every participant responsible for a road vehicle. The right choice is the experience whose risk and pace match the group, not simply the most dramatic photograph.
