Why this garden can make Kobe feel bigger

Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens rises immediately behind Shin-Kobe rather than requiring a long side trip into rural Hyogo. The ropeway covers 1,460 metres in about ten minutes and climbs toward an observation area around 400 metres above the city.

The view changes the scale of a Kobe day. The gondola looks over urban Kobe, the port side of the city, Nunobiki Falls and the historic Gohonmatsu Dam before reaching gardens spread down the mountainside.

The official garden describes 12 themed areas with roughly 75,000 herbs and flowers of about 200 kinds. That is not a bloom guarantee: temperature, rain, pruning and season determine what is actually visible. Check the current garden update if a particular flower is the reason for going.

What to know

Match Klook activity 37865 and its one package

The current English Klook listing offers “Admission Ticket + Ropeway (roundtrip).” It includes one round-trip ropeway ticket and admission to Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens.

The package is not a one-way hiking ticket, a bottom-to-mid interval ticket or an unlimited ropeway pass. It also does not include meals, drinks or personal expenses shown in marketplace photographs.

Select the actual visit date and compare the final USD charge with the official daytime round-trip fare. Klook currently labels the voucher instant confirmation, valid only on the selected date and free cancellation before redemption; the final package and voucher control.

What to know

Round trip is the simplest first-visit ticket

From April 1, 2026, the official daytime round-trip fare is ¥2,500 for adults and ¥1,250 for elementary and junior-high students. The one-way fare is ¥1,900 and ¥950. Preschool children ride and enter free.

A first-time visitor normally gains more resilience from round trip: ride from the bottom to the top, walk down through the gardens toward Kaze no Oka Mid Station, then use the ropeway for the final descent. Weather, fatigue or a steep path can make a planned hike back to the city less attractive.

Do not infer unlimited travel between the top and mid stations from the word “roundtrip.” Treat the ticket as one outbound and one return journey unless the physical ticket or staff states otherwise.

What to know

Redeem on 4F, then join the boarding line on 1F

Klook requires the mobile voucher to be exchanged for a physical ticket at Kobe Nunobiki Herb Garden Sanroku, or Bottom Station, on the fourth floor. Save the voucher offline and allow time for ticket exchange.

The official live notice distinguishes that ticket floor from the first-floor ropeway boarding line. An online or reseller ticket can make the purchase stage smoother, but it does not skip the gondola queue.

The bottom station is about five minutes on foot from Shin-Kobe Station, beside the west side of the ANA Crowne Plaza Kobe area. Route to the ropeway station itself rather than stopping at a generic garden map pin on the mountain.

What to know

The normal schedule changes by season and day

Spring from March 20–July 19 and autumn from September 1–November 30 normally close earlier on weekdays: the last upward ropeway is 16:45, the last descent is 17:15, and the garden closes at 17:00. Weekends and public holidays normally have evening operation.

Summer from July 20–August 31 normally has evening operation every day. Winter from December 1–March 19 normally returns to the earlier 16:45 upward, 17:15 downward and 17:00 garden close.

The official page can publish a different daily status for events, maintenance or weather. Use the live “Business & Traffic information” on the morning of the visit, not only the seasonal table copied into an itinerary.

What to know

Evening opening does not mean every path stays open

On a standard evening-opening day, the last upward ropeway is 20:15, the garden closes at 20:30 and the final downward ropeway is 21:00. After 17:00, the accessible area is normally limited to the top observation area.

There are seasonal exceptions. The official schedule says the Glasshouse area is also available during summer evening operation, while all areas may be available in the Christmas season. Daily notices can narrow the route further.

An evening ticket is therefore best for city lights, the observation plaza and whatever facilities the live notice names. It should not be chosen for a guaranteed full walk through all 12 gardens.

Summer 2026 has a defined night route

For the current GARDEN FEST summer period from July 11 through August 30, 2026, the venue announces night operation every day. On July 26, the published hours are 09:30–20:15 for the upward ropeway, 21:00 for the last descent and 10:00–20:30 for the garden, with garden-area admission until 20:00.

The service area extends from the observation area to the Glasshouse. The Forest Path and areas below the Lavender Garden close at 17:00, Kaze no Oka Mid Station is unavailable after that closure, and the Veranda terrace and Glasshouse close at 20:00.

Hiking gates close at 17:30, and boarding upward from the mid station is available only until 17:30. These details matter more than the headline 20:30 closing time when planning a downhill walk.

What to know

Do not book the 2026 maintenance closure

The official 2026 closure is Monday, August 31 through Thursday, September 3 for ropeway equipment inspection. Both the ropeway and garden are scheduled to close.

The next long inspection closure is currently scheduled for January 23 through February 12, 2027. A Klook calendar showing an apparently selectable date should not override the responsible operator’s closure notice.

Recheck both closures before travel because maintenance dates can change. Do not plan an alternative hiking admission during a full venue closure unless the operator explicitly opens a route.

What to know

Strong wind and thunder can stop the entire visit

The ropeway may close because of strong wind or thunder. Since the official access guidance says the herb garden is reached by ropeway, a suspension can remove the practical attraction plan rather than merely delaying one ride.

Check the live operating status before leaving Osaka, Kyoto or another part of Kobe. If weather is unstable, retain a city-level backup such as the waterfront, a museum or a neighborhood walk and keep the Klook voucher unredeemed until the visit is viable.

Free cancellation is currently labeled as available before redemption. Use the actual voucher and support instructions if service is suspended; do not assume a weather refund after the ticket has been exchanged.

What to know

Walk from top to mid for the most natural route

The venue’s own overview recommends taking time to walk from the top through the Four Seasons or Oriental gardens toward Kaze no Oka Mid Station. This creates a mainly downhill route through changing garden themes before the final ropeway descent.

A good first visit needs roughly two to four hours as editorial planning guidance. The Klook page suggests one to three hours, but meals, photography, greenhouse displays and slow movement on slopes can extend the stay.

Do not start the full downhill route after the lower garden closes or when the mid station is unavailable. In that situation, remain within the live evening area and return from the top station.

What to know

Wheelchairs and strollers can board, but the garden is steep

The ropeway can carry a wheelchair user seated in the chair with up to three companions in one gondola. Staff can stop the gondola and assist boarding. Strollers can also board without folding, although staff may request folding during congestion.

The garden route is step-free, but the operator warns that some slopes are steep. Four electric-assist wheelchairs are available for same-day loan at the observation rest house information desk; availability is not guaranteed.

A user who cannot manage a long downhill slope should plan a top-area visit and return from the top station rather than treating the mid-station walk as mandatory. Contact the venue for dimensions, transfer needs or other specific access requirements.

What to know

There is no general visitor parking at the garden

The venue has no ordinary visitor car park. Drivers are instructed to use nearby paid parking around Shin-Kobe and the bottom ropeway station.

From April 1, 2026, the two spaces in front of Bottom Station are limited to vehicles carrying a wheelchair user or holding the specified parking-exemption permit. The driver must leave the key at the fourth-floor ticket counter for emergency handling.

Public transport is the simpler plan: the municipal subway and Sanyo Shinkansen stop at Shin-Kobe, while city buses from Sannomiya use nearby Nunobiki or Shin-Kobe stops.

What to know

Old guides still show two facilities that no longer exist

The Herbal Footbath has been removed because of terrace construction. The Vow of Bell has also been removed. The official English facilities page and the current live notice both warn visitors about these changes.

Do not use either as a reason to buy a ticket or as a navigation landmark. Current attractions include the observation plaza, seasonal gardens, Glasshouse, Fragrance Museum, Spice Museum, shops, restaurant and the renewed Veranda at Kobe, subject to the day’s operating area.

The Sky Bar and outdoor-style facilities can close in strong wind or rain even when part of the venue remains open. Check the chosen food venue separately if a meal is central to the visit.

What to know

Pets are not permitted in the ropeway or garden

The operator states that pets cannot accompany visitors on either the ropeway or inside the herb garden. A carrier does not create a published exception.

Travelers with an assistance animal should contact the venue before purchase to confirm the applicable rules and boarding procedure rather than relying on the general pet prohibition.

This venue is also not a place to improvise a hike with a pet after discovering the restriction at Bottom Station; the practical garden access is controlled by the ropeway and official gates.

What to know

How to fit Nunobiki into a Kobe day

Nunobiki is strongest at the beginning or end of a Shinkansen-based Kobe visit because the bottom station is close to Shin-Kobe. A daytime visit can flow from the top through the gardens, then continue by subway or bus toward Kitano, Sannomiya or the waterfront.

An evening visit should be designed around the view and top-area facilities rather than the complete garden. Leave the final descent buffer visible on the phone and do not risk the last ropeway for a fixed onward train.
