The zoo is in Ito, not Nagoya

Izu Shaboten Zoo is at 1317-13 Futo in Ito City, Shizuoka, beside Mount Omuro. Klook’s address and map are correct, but some of its older English guide text still says “during your trip to Nagoya.” Ignore that phrase.

This matters when planning trains and hotels: Ito and Izu-Kogen are the relevant rail gateways. Nagoya is in Aichi Prefecture, far outside a practical local visit.

Use the official address and current bus timetable rather than a broad map search for “cactus zoo.” The Japanese name is 伊豆シャボテン動物公園.

What makes the park different

The park opened in 1959 and covers roughly 200,000 square metres at the foot of Mount Omuro. Its official site highlights free-roaming peafowl and squirrel monkeys, walk-in animal areas and a collection built around both animals and cacti.

Capybaras are the best-known residents, but the current official animal page also presents kangaroos, giraffes, zebras, ostriches, red pandas, anteaters, birds and smaller-animal interaction areas.

Choose it for the mixed animal-and-botanical experience. Travelers wanting only a conventional indoor zoo or a guaranteed show schedule may find the location and optional-activity costs disproportionate.

What to know

Allow two to four hours

Klook suggests two to four hours. Two hours supports a focused route through the main animals and cactus areas; three or four allows for feeding opportunities, the greenhouse, a meal and queue time.

The park is spread across sloped outdoor grounds, so distance and heat matter. Arriving early gives families and photographers time before the busiest activity periods.

Do not pair a full park visit with Mount Omuro on an unrealistically short connection. The lift, bus timetable and zoo each have separate queues and weather constraints.

Official prices change by date type

The official calendar checked July 26, 2026 lists weekday admission at ¥2,800 for junior-high age and older, ¥1,400 for elementary students and ¥700 for children age four and over who are not yet in elementary school.

Weekend, public-holiday and long-vacation admission is ¥3,000, ¥1,500 and ¥800 respectively. Klook lists children aged zero to three as free.

Use the venue’s date calendar to identify the band before comparing Klook. A USD discount against the highest adult price is not meaningful if your visit is an ordinary weekday or the child categories differ.

Summer 2026 has extended hours

The venue’s July–August 2026 notice extends hours from July 18 through August 31. It lists 08:30–18:00 on weekdays and 08:30–18:30 on weekends and public holidays, with some date-specific calendar entries.

Ordinary March–October information on Klook shows 09:30–17:00 and last admission at 16:30, but the official live calendar is more specific for the visit date. Always follow the venue calendar.

Extended hours do not guarantee that every feeding, boat, restaurant or indoor area runs until closing. Check the event schedule and last-use time separately.

What to know

The Klook ticket is flexible by date, not refundable

Klook’s current web ticket is valid for seven days from booking confirmation and gives instant confirmation. That short validity window can help when choosing one weather day during an Ito stay.

It does not allow cancellations, refunds or changes. Confirm that the seven-day window actually covers the planned visit before paying; booking too early can create an unusable ticket.

The package includes admission and tax, not transport, meals, drinks, personal expenses or every paid interaction inside the park.

What to know

It is not a direct-entry barcode

Klook explicitly says this ticket does not allow direct admission. Join the entrance line and follow staff instructions rather than walking to a gate expecting an automatic scan.

The URL voucher requires a smartphone with internet access. Open it before reaching the desk, keep the phone charged and do not rely only on a screenshot.

Do not mark or operate the ticket as used yourself. Klook warns that staff must perform the voucher operation and that a ticket already shown as used is not accepted.

What to know

The capybara bath is seasonal

The famous open-air capybara bath is a winter-season event, not a year-round feature included with every admission. A summer visitor can still see capybaras, but should not expect the bath shown in promotional images.

Exact dates, times, fruit decorations and animal participation can change. Animal health, weather and operational needs take priority over photography.

Check the official event page for the travel date. If the bath is the sole reason for visiting, wait for the venue to publish the relevant winter season rather than booking from an undated image.

Feeding and close contact have rules

The official animal page advertises designated snack-feeding experiences in several areas. Availability and quantities can be limited, and animal food is an additional onsite purchase unless the selected ticket explicitly says otherwise.

Never feed animals your own food. The venue’s FAQ permits visitors to bring food for themselves but expressly prohibits giving it to animals.

Follow staff and enclosure signs, keep fingers and loose items safe, and let animals move away. Admission never guarantees that a specific animal will approach or accept food.

The animal boat tour is a separate decision

The venue presents two Animal Boat Tours courses: a round-the-islands route and a Monkey Island landing route. These are activities beyond ordinary admission, with their own operating and capacity conditions.

Do not build a tight visit around the boat without checking the day’s schedule, sales method, age or safety restrictions and weather status at the venue.

Prioritize the general park first when time is limited. A long boat queue can reduce the cactus greenhouse and animal areas that make the admission worthwhile.

Choose Ito or Izu-Kogen Station deliberately

The official access page estimates Tokai Bus at about 35 minutes from Ito Station and about 20 minutes from Izu-Kogen Station. Taxis are approximately 25 and 10 minutes respectively.

The shorter Izu-Kogen ride can be useful when staying farther south, while Ito may fit travelers arriving through Atami. The best gateway depends on the live train and bus connection, not bus minutes alone.

Check the return bus before entry and save a fallback taxi number or budget. Rural services are less frequent than Tokyo transit, and missing one connection can change the evening.

Families, luggage and food are manageable

The official FAQ lists paid stroller rental on a first-come basis, a baby room, coin lockers and paid front-desk storage for bags too large for lockers.

Outside food is generally allowed for visitor consumption on benches, with proper waste disposal. Bringing a simple lunch can reduce queue risk, but never share it with animals.

Restaurants do not normally take individual reservations. Families should carry water and a snack even when planning to buy lunch onsite.

Pets can enter, but not every area

The venue permits pets on a leash but says some areas do not allow them. Owners may need to alternate entry, which can materially reduce how much a couple or family sees.

A pet-friendly admission policy does not guarantee access to animal contact zones, restaurants, boats or indoor exhibits. Confirm the current restricted-area map before travel.

Keep distance from free-roaming animals and follow every staff direction. The welfare of both zoo animals and the visiting pet comes before completing a route.

Creators need advance permission

The venue limits ordinary photography and video to private use. Its current policy prohibits live streaming and commercial social-media posting without special permission.

YouTubers, sponsored creators and production teams should contact the public-relations office before travel. The venue states that permission cannot be granted retroactively after unapproved filming.

Drones are prohibited throughout the group’s facilities, including aircraft launched outside and flown into the property. Do not interpret a scenic Mount Omuro setting as permission to fly.

First, choose the date and confirm official hours, price band and animal events. Second, check the complete train and bus connection in both directions.

Then compare Klook with the official ticket, ensuring the seven-day validity window and no-refund rule work. Load the connected voucher but leave staff to operate it.

At the park, identify the day’s feeding and boat times, then build a route that still covers the core animals and cactus areas. Treat any capybara bath as seasonal, never guaranteed.
