Why Saijo is worth a dedicated Hiroshima day trip
Saijo is one of Japan's best-known sake-brewing districts, with white-walled kura, red-brick chimneys and breweries clustered close to the station. For two days the Sake Festival links brewery areas, food, performances, family programming and the ticketed national tasting venue into one walkable event. It is a different trip from bar-hopping in central Hiroshima: the brewing town and festival program are the destination.
The event began by combining a community festival with the local brewing industry's earlier sake festival. The 2026 theme uses the old kana character 'ゑ' to evoke connections among people, place and celebration. Visitors who do not drink can still explore much of the wider program, but the ticketed Sake Hiroba has its own admission rules even for a companion who is not tasting.

Official dates, hours and venue areas
The official organizer confirms Saturday, October 10 from 10:00 to 19:00 and Sunday, October 11 from 10:00 to 17:00. The festival spreads around JR Saijo Station and includes the main venue, Sake Hiroba, brewery venues, Bishunabe, a children's area, cultural programs, Satake and JA venues, tea, food and other booths. Use the official map instead of looking for one entrance gate.
Sake Hiroba has shorter tasting hours: 10:00–19:00 Saturday and 10:00–16:00 Sunday at the west side of Saijo Central Park. Saturday has sessions at 10:00, 13:00 and 16:00; Sunday has sessions at 10:00 and 13:00. Each tasting period lasts 2 hours 15 minutes, followed by a changeover. Entry may open earlier for crowd control, but that is not a guaranteed extra tasting period.

What is free and what needs a ticket
The official site does not publish a single general admission fee or reservation for the wider street and venue program. Food, drinks, merchandise and separately managed activities remain individual purchases. Sake Hiroba is different: everyone entering needs an admission ticket, including a companion who does not drink.
Advance Sake Hiroba admission costs ¥4,200 including tax. It includes an original tasting cup, eight sake tasting tickets and one bottle of water. Additional point tickets are sold inside at ¥1,000 for ten points or ¥500 for five; one extra tasting uses three points. Individual labels can run out during a session because each has a fixed session allocation, and the final 2026 label count will not be confirmed until closer to the event.

Advance tickets, sold-out seats and same-day conditions
Advance admission is sold through Ticket Pia from August 3 until the day before the festival, ending earlier when the planned number is reached. The organizer provides three routes: Seven-Eleven paper tickets, Ticket Pia web purchase with account registration, and QUICK Pia smartphone tickets without registration using Apple Pay or Google Pay. Fees apply in addition to the face value, and the selected date and session cannot be changed after purchase.
Covered paid seating costs an additional ¥1,500, or ¥5,700 with admission. The original 140 seats in every session were announced sold out. The organizer later added a small number of seat-only tickets for all five sessions; treat those as limited live inventory, not guaranteed availability. There is no paid-seat sale on the day.
Same-day Sake Hiroba admission costs ¥5,000. Sales begin at the tasting venue at 09:30 and are limited to sessions not sold out in advance. The published sales windows end at 17:45 Saturday and 14:45 Sunday, but allocation can disappear earlier. Arriving without a ticket is therefore a backup plan, not a reliable booking strategy.
What to know
Entry rules, age limits and responsible tasting
Tickets are valid only for the printed session. You may leave during the session, but there is no re-entry. Sake is poured only into the provided ochoko, and the same label is limited to one serving per person. Outside food and drink, open flames, tents, tables, chairs, mats and other space-claiming items are prohibited in Sake Hiroba.
Visitors under 20 cannot enter Sake Hiroba except children of junior-high-school age or younger accompanied by a guardian. Staff may ask for identification. That exception is about venue entry, not permission to drink: alcohol remains prohibited for anyone under 20. Keep your own pace, use the provided water, eat beforehand and accept that staff can refuse service for safety.
What to know
JR Saijo Station is the easiest gateway
The official access guide places the festival about one minute on foot from JR Saijo Station's South Exit. Local trains take roughly 40 minutes from Hiroshima Station or from Mihara Station. From Sanyo Shinkansen Higashi-Hiroshima Station, use a bus or taxi for the roughly 20-minute trip; only Kodama services stop there. Hiroshima Airport has a limousine bus to Saijo taking about 25 minutes.
Saijo Station is compact compared with a major-city terminal, but the festival concentrates arrivals and departures. Save a later return option and avoid carrying a suitcase through the event. The tourism information desk is on the station's second floor and normally offers English support, but event-day demand can be high.

Parking, free shuttle and the no-driving decision
A temporary car park is planned at Hiroshima University's North No. 3 parking area. It costs ¥1,000 per day and is scheduled 08:30–20:00 Saturday and 08:30–18:00 Sunday. A free shuttle is planned about every 15 minutes, starting from the university at 09:15; the final return from the festival is 19:30 Saturday and 17:30 Sunday.
Coaches and minibuses require advance reservation by October 8 and cost ¥2,200 per day. For most international visitors, these arrangements are less useful than rail. If anyone in your party drinks, assign a completely sober driver before arrival or do not bring a car. The temporary car park has a fixed closing time and vehicles may not be left overnight.
What to know
Rain, crowds, luggage and last checks
Sake Hiroba is officially scheduled to operate in rain and is outdoors, so bring a raincoat. The parade-style Sake Midarebayashi is planned in light rain but may be canceled if the paper drums could be damaged. The reviewed official pages do not state one blanket severe-weather rule for every festival venue, so check the homepage and JMA warnings on the day rather than assuming all programs share the tasting venue's rain policy.
The official FAQ had not yet announced a festival-wide luggage storage service when checked September 23. Leave large bags at accommodation or a confirmed station facility before entering the crowd. Expect queues for popular labels, food and trains, and do not block brewery doors or neighborhood access while waiting.
Before departure, confirm the festival operation, chosen tasting session, live seat inventory, QR or paper ticket, official map, weather, JR service and return plan. - Paid seating is sold out: use standard admission and expect a standing tasting format; do not bring a chair or mat into Sake Hiroba.
- A local train is disrupted: check JR West before leaving Hiroshima or Mihara and keep enough margin for the fixed tasting session.
- Heavy weather changes part of the event: follow the organizer's homepage and venue staff; do not infer that every area follows the Sake Hiroba rain policy.
- You have large luggage: leave it at accommodation or a confirmed storage point because the official FAQ had not announced event luggage storage.
