What to know
Choose the day by the kind of festival you want
The program changes each day. Information below was checked against the responsible Kochi authorities on August 9, 2026.
- August 9 — Tosa Student Yosakoi at the Kochi Castle special stage from 11:00–15:00; prayer ceremony at Toyo Denka Central Park from 17:00; eve festival at the same park from 18:00–21:30.
- August 10–11 — main festival: Obiyamachi from 11:00–22:00, Toyo Denka Central Park from 11:30–22:00, Kochi University from 11:30–14:30 and most other central competition or performance venues from 12:30–21:30.
- August 10–11 — Otesuji headquarters viewing: daytime 13:15–17:15 and nighttime 17:45–21:30; Yanagimachi operates for local teams only on August 11 from 17:00–21:30.
- August 12 — Kochi Castle opening ceremony 12:30–13:00; nationwide contest at Toyo Denka Central Park 13:00–18:00; Kochi Castle, Otesuji and Obiyamachi performances 13:15–22:00; awards and after-festival at Toyo Denka Central Park 18:30–22:00.
What to know
Public viewing and Otesuji reserved seats are different plans
The official festival schedule covers public streets, parks and stages across central Kochi and does not list one general admission ticket. A paid seat is therefore not required simply to enter the festival area. Crowd controls, barriers and temporary access changes still apply at each venue.
Otesuji is the controlled reserved-seat option, with about 2,700 bleacher seats. Daytime general seats are listed at ¥1,000 for B and ¥2,000 for A; nighttime seats are ¥2,000 for B and ¥3,000 for A. Prices and availability were checked on August 9, 2026. Wheelchair and group options have separate categories on the official page.
What to know
Buy Otesuji tickets only from the official route
General sales began June 29 at 10:00. Advance inventory can sell out, and same-day tickets are sold only when seats remain. A ticket cannot be changed or cancelled because your itinerary changes, so match the correct date, daytime or nighttime session, side and seat category before payment.
The association has warned about high-priced for-profit resale. Use the official sales links and do not assume an unofficial listing will be accepted. If the performance is cancelled because of severe rain or another organizer decision, the association publishes the refund method; keep the physical or electronic ticket needed for that process.
What to know
Use JR Kochi Station as the transport anchor, not a parking plan
The Kochi Station performance venue is immediately around JR Kochi Station, while other venues spread through the central city. Save the official venue map and follow staff routing because the shortest map path may cross a dance route or controlled street.
General parking at the Kochi Station venue is unavailable on August 10–11, and tour-bus parking is unavailable from August 6–12. The official notice strongly favors public transport. From August 6–12, the MY-YU Bus uses platform 5 at the Kochi Station Bus Terminal instead of its usual tourist-bus stop, so confirm the platform before a side trip.
What to know
Light rain can continue; severe weather can change the plan
The 2026 schedule notes that performance times can change because of weather. At the Otesuji stands, the event normally continues in light rain, the bleachers have no roof and spectators should use raincoats rather than umbrellas while seated. A severe-weather cancellation uses the organizer's official notice and refund instructions.
Summer heat remains a separate risk even when Kochi is not named in the day's Heat Stroke Alert. Check the Ministry of the Environment's current Kochi WBGT, carry water, build in shade or indoor cooling time and leave the crowd if you feel unwell.
What to know
The August 9 fireworks are a separate ticketed event
The Kochi City Summer Fireworks are scheduled for August 9 from 19:45–21:00 at Kagami River Midori-no-Hiroba. They overlap the eve festival but use a separate venue and ticket system. All fireworks viewing seats are paid; there is no official free-seating area.
If severe weather prevents the August 9 fireworks, the official fallback date is August 13; if that date is also unsuitable, the fireworks are cancelled. There is no event parking, and road restrictions apply. Do not interpret a dance-festival ticket as fireworks admission or build a connection that assumes both can be watched from the same seat.
What to know
Photograph from a place that does not obstruct the route
At the Otesuji stands, drones, smoking, pets, set-up tripods and selfie sticks are prohibited, and aisles must remain clear. Follow staff instructions at every other venue as well, keep bags inside your space and do not step into the dance lane for a closer picture.
A festival is a performance, but close portraits still deserve consideration. Avoid flash or equipment when the venue prohibits it and do not publish an identifiable child or spectator as the subject without permission. The linked festival-etiquette guide provides a fuller checklist.
If that does not work
Use the fallback.
- If Otesuji is sold out, use another official public venue or choose a different session instead of an unofficial resale ticket.
- If weather changes the schedule, open the festival's official update page and follow the ticket issuer's cancellation or refund instructions.
- If central streets are crowded, follow police and event staff diversions rather than forcing the shortest map route.
- If the fireworks are postponed, treat August 13 as a separate new plan and confirm both transport and ticket instructions again.
