Japan Rail Pass Guide 2026: Prices, Rules and How It Works
Learn Japan Rail Pass prices, eligibility, covered trains, purchase methods and who should buy the nationwide JR Pass in 2026.
The short answer
The Japan Rail Pass can still be valuable, but it is no longer an automatic purchase for every first-time visitor.
Buy the nationwide pass only after listing the long-distance JR journeys that fall inside the same 7-, 14- or 21-day period and comparing their current individual prices with the pass price.
A simple Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka–Tokyo trip is usually below the price of a 7-day Ordinary Pass. A faster multi-region itinerary that continues to Hiroshima, Fukuoka and back to Tokyo is much more likely to justify it.
As of August 11, 2026, the official online adult price is ¥50,000 for 7 days, ¥80,000 for 14 days and ¥100,000 for 21 days.

What is the Japan Rail Pass?
The JAPAN RAIL PASS is a nationwide rail pass offered jointly by the six JR Group companies. It is intended for eligible visitors who will travel across several parts of Japan rather than remain mainly in one city or region.
There are two classes:
- Ordinary Car
- Green Car
Each class is sold for:
- 7 consecutive days
- 14 consecutive days
- 21 consecutive days
The pass allows repeated use of covered JR services during its validity period. It does not make every railway, subway, bus or ferry in Japan free.

A child is generally aged 6 to 11 under the official rules. For an online purchase, a traveler who is 11 on the payment date is treated as a child even if they turn 12 by the use date.
Overseas agency purchase
For purchases from an overseas JR-designated agency made by September 30, 2026, the listed yen prices match the official online prices above.
For agency purchases made on or after October 1, 2026, the listed prices increase:

Who is eligible?
The main eligibility route is a foreign national visiting Japan from overseas for sightseeing under the immigration status of Temporary Visitor.
The wording matters. A traveler who enters under another status, including a re-entry permit or certain work-related statuses, cannot collect or exchange the pass through the tourist eligibility route.
At immigration, make sure your passport contains the required Temporary Visitor evidence. Automated immigration gates may not automatically place the necessary stamp or sticker in the passport, so follow the airport instructions and request the required proof when needed.
Japanese nationals living abroad have a separate and more restrictive eligibility route involving evidence of long-term overseas residence. The official online purchase service is not available to that group, even when they qualify through the overseas-resident rules.
Purchasing online or holding an Exchange Order does not override eligibility. JR checks the documents before issuing the pass.
What to know
What trains and transport are covered?
The nationwide pass covers a large part of the JR network, including:
- Ordinary cars on covered JR Shinkansen services
- JR limited express, express and local trains
- Green Car travel when the traveler holds the Green Pass and the selected train provides that facility
- The Tokyo Monorail
- JR WEST Miyajima Ferry between Miyajimaguchi and Miyajima
- BRT services listed by JR
- Local services operated by the JR bus companies listed in the official conditions, with exceptions
A ¥100 Miyajima Visitor Tax is payable separately when visiting the island.
The pass does not generally cover:
- Tokyo Metro
- Toei Subway
- Osaka Metro
- Municipal buses that are not covered JR services
- Most private railway companies
- Highway buses, including JR Group highway buses
- Non-JR portions of through-services unless a specific official exception applies
A train can continue from a JR line onto a private railway without requiring a transfer. That does not necessarily make the private section free. Check the operator and route, not only the train name.
What to know
Can Japan Rail Pass holders use Nozomi and Mizuho?
Not with the pass alone.
Nozomi and Mizuho services on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen require an additional ticket sold specifically to Japan Rail Pass holders. A separate ticket is required for each use.

The same listed add-on applies to eligible Green Car, Ordinary reserved-seat and Ordinary non-reserved-seat use, subject to the pass type and seat availability.
Travelers focused on financial value can instead use pass-covered Hikari, Kodama, Sakura or Tsubame services where they fit the route. These options may take longer or require a transfer, so include time as well as price in the decision.
What to know
Who should consider buying the nationwide pass?
It is a strong candidate when most of the following are true:
- You will visit several regions rather than one metropolitan area.
- You have multiple expensive Shinkansen or limited-express journeys.
- The expensive journeys fit inside one consecutive pass period.
- The current total of covered individual tickets is comfortably above the pass price.
- You value the ability to change covered journeys without buying a new base ticket each time.
- You are prepared to use pass-covered services instead of paying repeatedly for Nozomi or Mizuho add-ons.
A route such as Tokyo–Kyoto–Hiroshima–Hakata–Osaka–Tokyo is much more likely to work than a route limited to Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.
What to know
Who probably does not need it?
The nationwide pass is usually a weak purchase when:
- You will stay mainly in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka or another single area.
- Your only major intercity route is Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka–Tokyo.
- You are flying between distant regions.
- Your travel is spread across more days than the selected pass period.
- Most of your daily transport uses subways, buses or private railways.
- A regional JR pass covers the expensive part of the itinerary for less.
- Discounted individual Shinkansen fares are available for the exact trains you can commit to.
Do not add small city rides until the pass appears profitable. Urban JR trips may add some value, but they rarely rescue a large shortfall by themselves.
What to know
Ordinary Car or Green Car?
Ordinary Car is the practical default for most visitors. Shinkansen Ordinary Cars already provide reserved seating and substantial legroom.
Green Car may be worthwhile when you value:
- Wider seating and more personal space
- A quieter premium environment
- Additional comfort on repeated long journeys
- Green Car access on trains that provide it
Green Car does not make non-JR transport free and does not include every premium facility. It also does not remove the need for a Nozomi or Mizuho add-on.
For a 7-day pass, the adult difference between Ordinary and Green is ¥20,000. Buy Green for comfort, not because it is easier to recover the price.
What to know
How do you buy the Japan Rail Pass?
Option 1: Official online purchase
For most eligible foreign tourists, this is the most convenient route.
You need:
- Passport information
- An email address
- A credit card in the purchaser's name
- The intended pass type and start date
The official system operates from 4:00 to 23:30 Japan time. One purchase can include up to six eligible travelers, including the purchaser.
A major advantage is the ability to reserve eligible Shinkansen and limited-express seats online before collecting the physical pass in Japan.
After arrival, collect the pass at an eligible location. Present the required passports and Temporary Visitor proof for all included travelers. Reserved-seat tickets booked online must also be collected before boarding.
Option 2: Overseas JR-designated agency
Buy an Exchange Order before travel and exchange it in Japan.
The Exchange Order itself is not valid for boarding. It must be presented with the required passport and eligibility documents at an official exchange location.
An Exchange Order must normally be exchanged within three months of its issue date, and exchange can be completed from one month before the chosen use date. A lost or stolen Exchange Order cannot be exchanged for a pass.
Check the agency price carefully for purchases made on or after October 1, 2026.
What to know
Choose the start date around expensive travel
The pass period should usually begin on the first expensive covered intercity journey, not automatically on the day you land.
For example, a traveler spending four days in Tokyo before traveling west may be better starting a 7-day pass on the Tokyo–Kyoto travel date. Paying separately for the airport transfer and early Tokyo journeys can preserve the entire pass window for more expensive rail travel.
There are exceptions. Starting at the airport may make sense when:
- The airport journey is covered and expensive
- You leave the arrival city immediately
- All major journeys still fit inside the validity period
- Your arrival time leaves enough time to collect the pass safely
Build the calendar first. Do not choose the start date from habit.
If that does not work
Use the fallback.
- If the individual-ticket total is below the pass price, buy individual tickets or compare regional passes.
- If the total is only slightly above the pass price, check early-booking products and the cost of likely itinerary changes.
- If you are not eligible, do not buy through an unofficial workaround; use ordinary tickets and other visitor passes for which you qualify.
- If the official online payment fails, contact the official service or use a JR-designated agency rather than a look-alike website.
- If your desired train is full, search another departure, reserve a covered service or ask JR staff about current options.
- If your pass or Exchange Order is lost, follow the official conditions immediately; the pass is not normally reissued.

Japan Rail Pass Guide 2026 FAQ
Is the Japan Rail Pass unlimited?
It allows repeated travel on covered JR services during the valid period. It is not unlimited across all transport in Japan, and pass type, train, facility and route restrictions still apply.
Is the 7-day Japan Rail Pass worth it for Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka?
Usually not on the intercity fares alone. A regular-season comparison using pass-compatible Shinkansen services places Tokyo–Kyoto–Shin-Osaka–Tokyo at about ¥30,520, well below the ¥50,000 adult Ordinary Pass.
Does the pass cover the Tokyo subway?
No. JR lines such as the Yamanote Line are covered, but Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway are separate systems.
Are seat reservations free?
There is no additional reservation charge for eligible seats covered by the pass. A reservation is still required for all-reserved trains, and a seat is not guaranteed until it is reserved.
Can I buy the pass after arriving in Japan?
The official online service may be used within its current purchase window, but do not assume every JR station sells the pass over the counter. Confirm the official sales method, purchase window and collection location before relying on a last-minute purchase.
Can I use Nozomi with the Japan Rail Pass?
Yes, only when you also purchase the dedicated Nozomi Mizuho Ticket for the section and train you use.
