The emotional center of Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is the Kuroshio Sea tank. A whale shark and manta rays move across a huge blue field above the silhouettes of visitors, turning an animal exhibit into one of Okinawa’s defining travel images. The official aquarium route builds toward that moment through sunlit coral habitats, tropical fish and a deep-sea zone based on the waters around Okinawa.

This is not a small city aquarium added between meals. The Kuroshio Sea tank alone holds 7,500 cubic meters of water and measures 10 meters deep, 35 meters wide and 27 meters long. The official January 2026 description listed about 80 species in the tank, while the deep-sea area presents about 100 rare species. The value comes from seeing Okinawa’s marine environment interpreted at this scale, not from chasing one scheduled show.

The attraction also sits inside Ocean Expo Park above the East China Sea. A strong visit combines the paid aquarium with free nearby animal facilities and the coastal setting, making the long northern journey feel like a destination rather than a ticket collection stop.

The aquarium is in Motobu—not Naha or Okinawa City

The exact address is 424 Ishikawa, Motobu-cho, Kunigami District, Okinawa 905-0206. It is on the northern part of Okinawa’s main island inside Ocean Expo Park. Okinawa City is a separate municipality, and Naha is the southern gateway around the main airport.

This distinction changes the day. The aquarium’s official guide estimates about two hours from Naha Airport by car using the expressway. A direct or connecting bus takes roughly two hours 20 minutes to three and a half hours, depending on the service and traffic. A round trip can therefore consume four to seven hours before the visit itself.

Make Churaumi the anchor of a northern day, stay in Nago or Motobu, or combine it with another carefully chosen stop. A short Naha itinerary may gain more from attractions with less transport unless seeing the whale shark is a major trip priority.

What the admission ticket covers—and what is free

The paid ticket covers Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium. The current regular prices are ¥2,180 for adults, ¥1,440 for high-school students, ¥710 for elementary and junior-high students, and free admission for children under six. Identification or a student card may be requested. Same-day re-entry is allowed when you present and retain the ticket.

Ocean Expo Park itself and all of its parking areas are free. Close to the aquarium, Okichan Theater and its dolphin programs, Dolphin Lagoon, the Sea Turtle Pavilion, Manatee Pavilion and Churaumi Plaza also have free admission. Their hours and programs differ from the aquarium, and animal conditions or weather can cause changes.

Other park attractions are separate purchases. The Tropical Dream Center currently charges ¥760 for adults and high-school students, while the Oceanic Culture Museum and planetarium charges ¥190 for the same age group; younger students enter those two facilities free under the current park table. Food, locker use, paid animal-feeding programs, premium Cafe Ocean Blue tank-side seats and transport are not part of a standard aquarium ticket.

2026 hours, closures and the Wednesday exception

From July 18 through July 31, 2026, the aquarium is open 8:30–20:00 with last admission at 19:00. From August 1 through August 31, it opens 8:30–21:00 with last admission at 20:00. Outside the listed peak periods, the current schedule is 8:30–18:30 with last admission at 17:30. These hours were checked on July 26, 2026.

The aquarium says it has no scheduled closing days through March 31, 2027, apart from temporary closures such as typhoons. That does not mean every part of Ocean Expo Park operates every day. From July 1, 2026 through March 31, 2027, the park is partially open every Wednesday for maintenance inspections.

On those Wednesdays the aquarium, Dolphin Lagoon, Sea Turtle Pavilion, Manatee Pavilion, Churaumi Plaza, Haisai Plaza, Emerald Beach and listed aquarium-area dining remain open. Several botanical, cultural, playground and rest facilities close. If a wider park day is important, check the official partial-opening list rather than relying only on the aquarium’s open status.

The 2026 Night Aquarium changes the best ticket comparison

From August 1 through August 31, 2026, the Churaumi Night Aquarium extends the aquarium to 21:00 and shifts the tank lighting to a nighttime atmosphere from 18:00. The surrounding manatee, turtle and dolphin facilities close at 19:00, so a late visit creates a different experience rather than simply adding more hours to the same full park day.

The aquarium’s official web-only evening ticket is valid for entry from 17:00 between July 18 and August 31. It reduces the adult price from ¥2,180 to ¥1,730, the high-school price from ¥1,440 to ¥1,140, and the elementary/junior-high price from ¥710 to ¥560. It must be purchased by the day before and is not sold at the aquarium counter.

Klook currently displays its own summer web-only after-17:00 package alongside the regular e-ticket. The summer package is selected-date and labeled conditional cancellation, while the regular package has a 30-day validity badge and no cancellation. Compare the final package name, visit date, price, age categories and cancellation details; do not assume every option on the same product page has the same rules.

How the regular Klook e-ticket works

Klook’s regular English package is labeled “[E-ticket] Churaumi Aquarium Ticket.” On July 26, 2026, it showed instant confirmation, entry with the mobile voucher, 30-day validity and no cancellation. The listed categories were adult, high-school student aged 16–18, and elementary/junior-high student aged 6–15.

The page says the mobile QR can be scanned for entry without printing. A 30-day voucher window is not 30 days of aquarium access; it is the period in which an unused regular voucher can be activated or presented under the final instructions. Save the live voucher, charge the phone and carry any identification requested for the selected age category.

Prices, promotions and currency conversion are dynamic, so this guide does not quote Klook’s temporary USD amount. Compare its final charge with the official yen price for the same traveler ages. If you choose the summer after-17:00 package, ignore the regular ticket’s 30-day and no-cancellation badges and read the selected-date package and voucher instead.

What to know

There is no verified ‘quietest hour’—plan around what you value

The aquarium does not publish usable crowd-by-hour guidance, and its current congestion forecast link is unavailable. Claims that a specific hour is always empty would therefore be speculation. The official summer promotion recommends the evening because it is cooler and discounted, not because it guarantees smaller crowds.

Choose an early arrival if you want maximum time for the free surrounding facilities and the morning window for the above-water Kuroshio view. Choose an evening visit if the summer lighting, cooler conditions and lower official web price matter more, while accepting that the dolphin, turtle and manatee facilities close at 19:00.

Animal feeding and programs can change with animal health. The official program currently lists manta-ray feeding at 9:30 and whale-shark feeding at 15:00 and 17:00. Treat these as current planning references, not promises worth risking a missed return bus for.

Do not miss the above-water Kuroshio view

Exploring the Kuroshio Sea is an observation course above the aquarium’s largest tank. It reopened on July 1, 2026 and does not currently require a reservation. The perspective is entirely different from the giant acrylic window: visitors look down into the working tank and see how much water sits beyond the familiar front view.

Current entry windows are 9:00–10:45 and 17:30–18:15. From July 18 through August 31, 2026, the evening window extends to 18:45. Viewing is not allowed outside those hours for animal-health management, so an ordinary afternoon arrival can miss it even when the aquarium is open.

Use the designated elevator near the Whale Shark and Manta Ray Corner on the first floor. Check the official program page on the day because operating windows can change with season or animal conditions.

Driving is simplest; P7 is the practical parking target

A rental car gives the most control over a northern itinerary. The official travel estimate from Naha Airport is about two hours via the Okinawa Expressway and about two hours 50 minutes on local roads, but traffic can make either journey longer. Leave a large buffer before a flight, vehicle return or timed dinner.

All Ocean Expo Park parking is free. The P7 North multilevel car park is closest to the aquarium and has more than 1,000 standard spaces plus accessible spaces. P6 is also convenient. In August 2026, P7 is scheduled to stay open until 21:30, thirty minutes after the aquarium closes.

Some navigation systems do not recognize the aquarium name. The official access page suggests searching for Ocean Expo Park or Ocean Expo Commemorative Park and publishes a map code and telephone search option. Confirm the route with live navigation rather than copying an old driving time.

By bus, the return departure is part of the ticket decision

Direct options from the Naha area can include the Yanbaru Express Bus, expressway bus 117 and selected limousine or shuttle services. Other routes require a change at Nago Bus Terminal. For services using the park stop, get off at Kinen Koen Mae (Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium); the official aquarium guide estimates roughly a ten-minute walk from the stop.

Operator, stop, reservation and fare rules vary, and traffic can delay the published arrival. Use the official Ocean Expo Park route page only as an overview, then confirm the current timetable with the actual bus company. Do not copy a timetable from an old blog or assume every airport shuttle permits boarding in both directions.

Save a realistic return departure before entering. A late aquarium session that ends after the final useful bus creates an expensive taxi problem. Keep enough battery and offline details for the stop name, operator, booking reference and hotel address.

A half-day plan that uses the journey well

Ocean Expo Park’s official FAQ uses about 90 minutes as an average aquarium visit. For a first visit, allow two to three hours if you want to pause at the main tank, use the above-water course or cafe, then add another one to two hours for the free nearby facilities, a meal and walking. This is editorial planning guidance rather than an official visit limit. The aquarium itself imposes no viewing time limit, and same-day re-entry makes it possible to step out to nearby facilities and return.

An early plan can begin with the aquarium and the morning above-water observation window, continue through the Kuroshio and deep-sea zones, then move to the dolphin, turtle and manatee areas before lunch. A summer evening plan can start with the free outdoor facilities before 19:00 and enter the aquarium after 17:00 for the discounted, illuminated experience.

Nago Pineapple Park can be a playful one-to-two-hour add-on for families already driving north, but it is not beside the aquarium and should not compress the main visit. If your priority is the aquarium, protect enough time for Churaumi first and treat every second attraction as optional.

Families, wheelchairs and luggage need a little preparation

The roughly 500-meter aquarium route uses ramps and elevators, with wheelchair access to the first, third and fourth floors. Free wheelchairs and strollers are available first-come at P7 and other park locations, but quantities are limited and reservations are not accepted. The aquarium itself does not loan wheelchairs, so collect one before reaching the entrance.

Qualifying disability-certificate holders and one caregiver can enter free. The aquarium lists several accepted overseas credentials and asks visitors with unlisted documents to inquire. Confirm eligibility before buying a non-refundable reseller ticket.

Lockers inside the entrance range from ¥300 to ¥1,000 and accept coins or cashless payment. The extra-large compartment is 53 × 67 × 117 cm. That can help with backpacks and some luggage, but travelers should compare their bag dimensions rather than assume a large suitcase fits.

Food, Wi-Fi and small practical details

Food and ordinary drinks cannot be consumed inside the aquarium. Hydration drinks are permitted only in resealable containers, and Churaumi Plaza is the nearby covered option suggested for packed meals. There is no ATM anywhere in Ocean Expo Park, so do not arrive dependent on a cash withdrawal.

Restaurant Inoh on the aquarium’s fourth floor can be entered without an aquarium ticket. Cafe Ocean Blue is inside the paid route beside the Kuroshio tank. Its nine premium tank-side seats currently cost ¥1,000 for 50 minutes plus at least one order per person, while ordinary seats have no seat charge; reservations are not accepted.

The aquarium provides free smartphone audio guides and Wi-Fi. Each Wi-Fi session lasts up to 30 minutes and can be repeated without a stated limit; the SSID is Churaumi_Free_WiFi. Bring earphones and do not depend on public Wi-Fi for the return transport plan.

What to know

Rain is manageable; a typhoon can cancel the whole plan

Most of the main aquarium is indoors, which makes it useful on a rainy Okinawa day. The walk from parking is uncovered, however, and the surrounding dolphin, turtle and manatee facilities are separate outdoor or semi-outdoor areas. Bring an umbrella and shoes suitable for wet paths.

A typhoon or severe weather is a transport and safety decision, not merely an aquarium inconvenience. The aquarium can close temporarily, animal programs can be cancelled, buses can stop and roads can become unsuitable. Check the aquarium notice, Japan Meteorological Agency warnings and the selected transport operator before leaving.

A regular Klook package currently says no cancellation, while the summer package only says conditional cancellation. If weather disrupts operations, use the actual voucher and Klook support for that booking instead of assuming the general badge guarantees a refund.

Photography is welcome personally; commercial production needs approval

Personal photographs and video are allowed when they do not obstruct other visitors. Flash is permitted in many areas but prohibited where signs say so; continuous video lights are not allowed. Selfie sticks are prohibited, and staff may refuse tripods or monopods depending on safety and congestion.

Livestreaming and commercial or for-profit posting are restricted under the aquarium’s current guidance. Commercial location filming requires advance application, and drones may not be brought into or used in Ocean Expo Park. YouTubers, sponsored creators and production crews should secure written permission before building a shoot around ordinary admission.
