The Japan Meteorological Agency raised Mount Aso from Level 1 to Level 2 at 16:00 on June 21, 2026. As checked July 27, the warning remains listed. Entry is prohibited within roughly one kilometre of Nakadake First Crater, and the local official page says crater viewing is closed.

JMA warns about large volcanic blocks and pyroclastic flows within the restricted area, as well as ash, smaller wind-carried blocks and volcanic gas downwind. Follow barriers, announcements and instructions from authorities even if the commercial itinerary or promotional photographs show the crater.

The listing’s language about standing at the crater edge and seeing a blue-green lake does not describe what can be visited under the current restriction. It is marketing copy, not a live access guarantee.
