Before you go

Make these decisions in order.

  1. 01

If one specific Bandai item matters, search the official product and store inventory pages before crossing the city.

  2. 02

Check the machine price and lineup panel, then decide the maximum number of tries before inserting money.

  3. 03

Use the store’s capsule-recycling point when provided and ask staff before assuming a machine is broken or empty.

Understand the trend

The random result is the product experience

A capsule-toy machine shows a series, not a promise of the exact design you want. One turn gives one random capsule from the remaining mix. If you only want a single character, repeated attempts can become more expensive than buying a disclosed second-hand item elsewhere.

The practical rule is simple: inspect the lineup, set a maximum number of turns and stop when the activity stops being fun. A complete set is a collecting goal, not a normal expectation for a traveler with limited luggage.

Understand the trend

Specialist stores solve the search problem

Small groups of machines appear in stations, shopping centers and entertainment areas, but an official specialist store is better when the goal is selection. Bandai’s official shop finder lets users search locations, while some branch pages expose current product inventory with a timestamp.

Inventory remains a guide rather than a guarantee: the official pages warn that online stock information can differ from the actual machine. Use it to narrow the route, then keep a fallback nearby.

Understand the trend

Capsules, change and luggage need a small plan

Bring or obtain the denomination shown by the machine; payment methods differ. Larger specialist stores may have change machines or newer cashless units, but a random machine in a station may not. Do not block the aisle while sorting coins or opening multiple capsules.

Many large locations provide a capsule collection point. Separate the toy, insert and capsule only where the store instructs. Small parts are easy to lose, and dozens of rigid capsules consume more luggage space than expected.

Frequently asked questions

Gachapon & Capsule Toys FAQ

Are gachapon and gashapon the same thing?

Both terms are commonly used for capsule toys. Gashapon is Bandai’s brand name, which is why official Bandai locations use GASHAPON in English.

Can I choose the character inside?

Normally no. The machine shows the possible lineup, and the capsule dispensed is random.

Can staff exchange a duplicate?

Do not expect an exchange for a random result. Ask only if the machine malfunctioned, and keep the capsule and item as evidence for staff.

Where is the biggest official option in Tokyo?

Bandai Namco identifies the Ikebukuro main branch as its flagship and states that it has more than 4,000 machines.
