Mt. Moiwa Ropeway Guide: Tickets, Sunset, Crowds and Weather

What to know

The summit journey uses two different lifts

The first stage is the Mt. Moiwa Ropeway from Sanroku Station at the foot of the mountain to Chufuku Station. The official facility page lists a roughly five-minute ride, 15-minute operating interval and capacity of up to 66 passengers.

At Chufuku Station, transfer to the smaller mini cable car for the final climb to Summit Station and the observation deck. A ropeway-only ticket ends at the middle station; choose the combined set when the panoramic summit view is the purpose of the trip.

Official 2026 prices and child rules

The current official combined round-trip fare is ¥2,100 for an adult and ¥1,050 for a child of elementary-school age or younger. The combined one-way fare is ¥1,050 and ¥530 respectively. These prices were checked on July 26, 2026.

Up to two preschool children travel free with one adult. The senior discount ended on March 31, 2026. Sapporo resident discounts require individual proof of a local address and should not be treated as a tourist discount.

Summer, winter and last-ascent times

From April through November, the ropeway operates 10:30–22:00 with the final ascent at 21:30. The mini cable car operates 10:30–21:50 with its final ascent at 21:40. From December through March, the ropeway operates 11:00–22:00 and the mini cable car 11:10–21:50, with the same final-ascent times.

The official site asks visitors to complete ticket purchase around 21:25 because the 21:30 ropeway departs on time. December 31 and January 1 are closed. Annual maintenance also creates a spring closure; the 2026 closure ran April 1–23, so check the official calendar rather than copying that date into a future-year itinerary.

Sunset is beautiful and operationally difficult

Arriving before sunset can provide daylight, the color transition and city lights in one visit. It is also the most popular strategy, so the same timing creates the heaviest lift demand.

The official congestion page says a smooth round trip from Sanroku to the summit and back is about one hour. During the night-view peak, it can exceed two hours, and the descent from the summit can produce waits of about one hour. Graduation trips, Golden Week, summer vacation and Obon, the Snow Festival and Lunar New Year are specifically identified as high-demand periods.

Allow at least 90 minutes on an ordinary evening and two hours or more in a peak period. Do not schedule the nominal 22:00 closure as if it were a guaranteed return to central Sapporo.

What to know

Check visibility before buying or traveling

Cloud, fog, snowfall and low visibility can remove the city view even while the lifts operate. Strong wind or other severe weather can suspend service. The official homepage provides the current operating status, summit temperature, sunset and night-view estimates, plus a live camera.

Check those sources shortly before departure, not only a general Sapporo forecast. A clear afternoon does not guarantee a clear summit at night, and promotional photography is not a weather promise.

How the Klook ticket works

Klook activity 99611 currently sells a 90-day-valid round-trip ticket covering both the ropeway and mini cable car. The product is instant confirmation but allows no cancellations, refunds or changes.

Klook says the voucher must be used from Sanroku Station and is not valid for redemption at Chufuku Station. Its page also uses both “enter directly” wording and a station-redemption instruction, while the official facility guidance for web tickets requires presenting a QR code at the fourth-floor ticket counter for a paper ticket.

Use the Sanroku Station counter and allow time for the purchase or redemption line. A prepaid voucher does not automatically create priority boarding or remove the operating queue.

What to know

Do not assume a city transfer is included

The Klook package inclusion section lists the ropeway and mini cable car round trip. A separate marketing paragraph on the same page refers to bus transfers to and from Sapporo, but the visible package details do not define a city pickup, meeting time or return transfer.

Plan and pay for access from central Sapporo unless the final selected package explicitly lists a transfer. The free local shuttle described below runs only between the streetcar-area stop and Sanroku Station; it is not a transfer from Sapporo Station.

The streetcar and free shuttle need timetable planning

Take the Sapporo streetcar to Ropeway Iriguchi. The official access page places the free shuttle stop about one minute from the streetcar stop and the shuttle ride to Sanroku Station at about two minutes. It normally runs every 15 minutes.

The important limitation is the starting time: the official page currently says weekday shuttle service begins at 17:17, while weekends and holidays begin at 10:17, or 10:47 in winter. Outside those times, the walk from the shuttle stop to Sanroku Station is about 0.5 km and roughly 10 minutes.

The road rises toward the mountain. Snow, ice, a stroller or reduced mobility can make the walk materially harder than the distance suggests, so check the live timetable and accessible route.

Driving reaches only the middle station on the sightseeing road

The Mt. Moiwa Sightseeing Motorway runs from the Kitanosawa side to the parking area at Chufuku Station, not to the summit. Drivers still need the mini cable car for the final section.

For 2026, the road is scheduled from April 24 through November 20, subject to snow, road conditions and capacity restrictions. The current round-trip road toll is ¥1,200 for an ordinary car, separate from the mini cable car.

The official homepage announced that Sanroku parking will become paid from September 7, 2026, while older access and FAQ text still described it as free when reviewed. Drivers visiting on or after that date should check the new parking notice and live fee before departure.

What to know

Cold, snow and wind matter even in the city

The observation deck stands above central Sapporo and can be colder and windier than the streets below. Bring a warm layer in summer evenings and full winter protection in snow season, including footwear suitable for icy approaches.

A long descent queue can mean standing rather than moving. Keep medication, a charged phone and an extra layer with you rather than in a station locker or vehicle.

Accessibility is designed into the route

The official FAQ says the facility is barrier-free and a wheelchair user can travel to the summit observation deck. Sanroku Station has a lift from the first floor to the fourth-floor ticket and ropeway level.

That does not remove crowd, boarding or winter-approach considerations. Contact the operator for wheelchair dimensions, boarding assistance and the most suitable shuttle or parking approach when these details determine whether the trip is possible.

What to know

Food and payment should not control the last lift

Summit Station has a souvenir shop, The Jewels restaurant and a takeaway counter. Current published restaurant dinner service is 17:00–21:00 with last order at 19:30, and weekday lunch is closed. Hours can change.

The main staffed outlets accept major cards and multiple electronic or QR payments, but the official FAQ says vending machines at Chufuku and Summit stations are cash only. Restaurant guests may receive boarding priority when crowded, but that should not be interpreted as universal queue-skipping for every ticket holder.

Klook or the station ticket?

Compare Klook’s final USD amount with the official ¥2,100 adult or ¥1,050 child price using your actual card conversion. Klook can be useful when the price is lower and the 90-day window fits, but its no-refund condition transfers weather and itinerary risk to the traveler.

Buying at Sanroku preserves the option to check visibility and operation immediately before payment. It may cost more than a promotion, and both methods still use the same lift queues.

What to know

Who should visit, and who should skip it

Visit when a high panoramic view is a Sapporo priority, the live camera is promising and the schedule can absorb a late return. Daylight is a good alternative for families and travelers who want lower crowd risk.

Skip or postpone when cloud hides the summit, wind threatens suspension, the itinerary has a fixed evening departure or a long queue would be physically difficult. Sapporo has lower city observatories that can be simpler when the mountain conditions are poor.
