Why Does Japan Have a Rainy Season?

Japan’s early-summer rainy season forms where warm, humid air meets cooler air along the Baiu front. Its position shifts north, so timing and rainfall differ sharply by region.

Japan’s rainy season is created by a moving boundary in the East Asian summer circulation. In late spring and early summer, warm, humid maritime air meets cooler maritime air to the north. An east–west band called the Baiu front forms near that boundary and can linger around the archipelago, producing repeated cloud and rain. As the North Pacific High strengthens and expands northwestward, the front usually shifts north and weakens. Because Japan stretches so far from Okinawa to Tohoku, each region meets that pattern at a different time. It is not a promise of rain every day, and its beginning and end are gradual rather than fixed calendar dates.

Not one national date

JMA identifies the season separately for 12 regions. Its 1991–2020 climatology centers the period on May 10–June 21 in Okinawa, but June 15–July 28 in northern Tohoku.

A transition, not a switch

JMA treats onset and withdrawal as transitions of about five days. Initial announcements are preliminary and are checked against the full season in early September.

The Hokkaido exception

JMA does not assign a formal Baiu season to Hokkaido because the front often weakens and rainy-like spells there are too inconsistent from year to year.

One season, different days

A Baiu forecast can produce three very different travel days.

A slow-moving front can bring long periods of low cloud, drizzle or steady rain. Visibility, mountain paths and outdoor schedules may be affected even without a severe warning.

A wave or low along the front, combined with a strong supply of warm moist air, can intensify rainfall. This is the pattern that requires close attention to official warnings and local risk information.

The front can move away or weaken temporarily, allowing a dry, sunny and sometimes very hot interval. Being ‘in the rainy season’ never means that every hour or every day is wet.

The atmosphere

Japan sits beneath a seasonal meeting place in the air.

The familiar explanation that Japan is humid is true but incomplete. Humidity supplies water vapor; it does not by itself create a season. The organizing feature is the Baiu front, an almost stationary east–west frontal zone observed around Japan from late spring into early summer. Japan Meteorological Agency material describes it as the boundary where warm maritime tropical air meets cooler polar maritime air.

The boundary is part of the wider East Asian summer monsoon. Its exact structure changes from day to day: the temperature contrast, moisture supply, upper-level winds, embedded lows and the surrounding high-pressure systems all matter. That is why one part of Japan can have ordinary cloud while another part of the same front receives intense rain.

The Japanese characters for the season are 梅雨. In everyday speech the word is commonly read tsuyu; baiu is frequent in meteorological terms such as baiu zensen, the Baiu front. The vocabulary describes the same early-summer seasonal pattern, not two separate kinds of rain.

The geography

A long archipelago turns one moving front into several local calendars.

Japan extends for thousands of kilometers from subtropical Okinawa toward cool northern latitudes. The seasonal frontal zone therefore reaches and leaves different regions at different times. JMA’s 1991–2020 climatology places the center of the usual Okinawa transition around May 10 for onset and June 21 for withdrawal. The corresponding centers are June 6 and July 19 in Kinki, June 7 and July 19 in Kanto-Koshin, and June 15 and July 28 in northern Tohoku.

Those are climate averages, not booking guarantees. In an individual year the front can arrive early, retreat, return, become indistinct or remain active after a regional announcement. Okinawa can be emerging into summer while Tokyo is only entering its cloudy period, and Tohoku may still be affected after western Japan has moved on.

Hokkaido is the important exception to the official map. It can certainly have wet, cloudy summer weather, and the Baiu front or other systems can influence it. But JMA does not identify a formal Hokkaido Baiu period because the front often weakens before reaching the island and comparable rainy spells are not consistent enough from year to year.

What a date means

The announced beginning and end are careful summaries, not weather switches.

JMA assesses a region’s transition by looking mainly at changes in sunshine, together with precipitation, pressure patterns, upper-level westerlies and the outlook. Because the change is gradual, the agency says the transition normally covers about five days. The published date represents the center of that transition rather than a moment when a national rainy-season switch is turned on or off.

An initial announcement is provisional. JMA considers the weather already observed and the outlook for about the following week, then confirms the season after reviewing the full progression in early September. Some years do not produce a clear date at all. If a recognizable withdrawal has not occurred by around August 7, JMA may leave the ending unidentified rather than manufacture a precise answer.

A weather chart also need not draw the front on every rainy-season day. The broader atmospheric pattern and the continuity of cloudy or rainy weather can still support the seasonal assessment. For travelers, the date is useful climate context; the daily forecast and current warning are the operational information.

Why it does not rain every day

The front moves, bends and changes strength.

The word ‘season’ is easy to misread as continuous weather. In reality, the front may lie over a region, shift offshore, move north temporarily or weaken. High pressure can bring a sunny break, while a new low or renewed moisture inflow can reactivate the rain. Local terrain then redistributes what falls: windward mountains can enhance rain while another place receives much less.

JMA’s July 2026 monthly report is a useful current example of that unevenness. Northern Japan received above-normal precipitation, while eastern and western Japan and Okinawa-Amami received below-normal precipitation. The report links the contrast to the changing position of lows, fronts, moist air and high pressure—not to one uniform curtain of rain over the country.

The same distinction applies to intensity. A gray day with light rain and a stalled front fed by a strong corridor of warm moist air are both possible during Baiu, but their risks are completely different. Forecast wording, warnings and local risk maps matter more than the seasonal label alone.

Rainy season is not typhoon season

Different systems can overlap without being the same phenomenon.

The Baiu front is an elongated seasonal boundary. A tropical cyclone is a rotating low-pressure system that develops over warm ocean water. A typhoon can approach during the Baiu period and supply moisture or disturb the front, but the existence of a rainy season does not mean a typhoon is present.

Japan also experiences other rainy patterns, including an autumn frontal season often called akisame, winter snow and rain on the Sea of Japan side, localized summer thunderstorms and rainfall from individual lows. Calling every wet day ‘tsuyu’ obscures the cause and can lead travelers to miss the warning attached to the actual system.

A changing climate

Warming affects moisture and extremes, but does not explain every Baiu event.

The seasonal meeting of air masses is the basic reason the Baiu front exists. Climate change is not a substitute explanation for that mechanism. It can, however, change the environment in which the front operates. Warmer air can contain more water vapor, and JMA reports a long-term increase in Japan’s extreme heavy-rain events alongside rising atmospheric moisture.

That finding does not mean every rainy-season storm was caused by warming or that every future Baiu period will be wetter everywhere. Front position, winds, lows and regional topography continue to create large year-to-year and place-to-place variation. The careful conclusion is that the background potential for intense rainfall is increasing while individual events still require meteorological analysis.

For a traveler

Plan around the regional forecast, then respond to the actual risk.

Rainy-season travel can be rewarding: gardens are green, hydrangeas bloom and some destinations are less crowded. Build flexibility into outdoor days, carry a compact umbrella or light shell, protect documents and electronics, and choose footwear that can dry. Humidity can be tiring even without heavy rain, so make room for hydration and indoor breaks; sunny intervals can also become abruptly hot.

The safety threshold is not ‘rainy season’ but the current local information. Check JMA’s English warnings and forecasts before mountain walks, river activities and long road journeys. Never cross a barrier, enter a closed trail or approach a swollen river because the rain at your hotel seems light.

Railways, ferries, ropeways and attractions make their own operational decisions. Recheck the responsible operator on the day, especially after a night of heavy rain, because slope inspection or river conditions can affect service after the sky improves. For a multi-city itinerary, compare each region separately rather than applying Tokyo’s forecast to Kyoto, Okinawa or Tohoku.

The bigger idea

A season can be a useful name for a boundary that never stops changing.

Japan’s rainy season feels like a stable item on the calendar because people name it, forecast it and plan around it. Meteorologically, it is a sequence of changing days produced by a mobile frontal zone. The label is a summary of probability and circulation—not a wall of weather that covers Japan all at once.

That distinction makes the season easier to understand and easier to travel through. Ask where the front is, how active it is and what the local warning says. Those three questions explain far more than asking whether Japan is simply ‘in tsuyu.’
