What to know
Buy the ticket before taking a seat
GO TOKYO’s current dining guide says casual venues such as ramen shops may place a ticket vending machine near the entrance. Purchase the meal ticket first, give it to staff and then take the seat staff indicates.
Do not walk past the machine simply because a counter seat is open. If the venue has both a queue and a machine, follow its signs or staff instructions for which comes first.
What to know
Decide before you reach the controls
Use a menu board, window display or photos beside the machine to identify the dish and price. This keeps a narrow entrance moving and gives you time to compare similar-looking choices.
Look for an English or language button on touchscreen models. On a Japanese-only machine, match the dish name, photo and price carefully, or show staff the item you want before paying.
What to know
Insert payment and select each item
JNTO’s ramen guide gives the common sequence: insert money, select the ramen, drinks and sides, take the change, and hand the printed ticket to staff. GO TOKYO’s visitor guide shows the same insert-select-ticket-exchange flow.
A touchscreen may ask you to build the order before presenting a payment screen. Follow the prompts shown by that machine rather than forcing a memorized sequence.
What to know
Main dishes and extras have separate buttons
JNTO explains that machine buttons can correspond to the main ramen, toppings, side dishes and drinks. Selecting only an egg or extra noodles does not automatically include a bowl.
Start with the main dish, then add only the extras you want. Check the quantity and total on a screen when available before confirming payment.
What to know
Collect every ticket and your change
One order may produce multiple small tickets. Check the output slot again before moving away, and collect coins, banknotes and a receipt from their separate return points.
Keep the tickets flat and dry. They are proof of the paid order and must be exchanged with restaurant staff; the machine itself normally does not dispense the prepared meal.
What to know
Hand the tickets to staff and wait
Give all tickets to the staff member or designated kitchen counter. Staff may keep the whole ticket, tear off a numbered stub or ask a short follow-up question.
Do not choose a seat until staff directs you unless a sign clearly says seating is free-choice. Keep any returned number or stub visible until the food arrives.
What to know
Payment methods vary by machine
Some machines accept only cash, while newer models may display card, IC-card or other cashless logos. JNTO advises checking the specific venue and keeping cash available because acceptance is not universal.
Use only the payment method shown on the machine. If an overseas card, large banknote or cashless device is rejected, ask staff instead of repeating the attempt until the queue stops.
What to know
Ask staff to correct a mistake
If you selected the wrong dish, paid twice, received no ticket or left change inside, tell staff immediately and point to the machine. Keep the receipt and do not hand over an incorrect ticket before explaining.
Refund and replacement procedures depend on the restaurant. Do not cancel by pressing unrelated buttons or assume that abandoning the ticket automatically reverses payment.
If that does not work
Use the fallback.
- If the machine has no clear language option, photograph or point to the desired menu item and ask staff.
- If a selection cannot be purchased, choose another available dish or confirm the status with staff.
- If cashless payment fails, use another displayed method or ask whether the restaurant accepts cash.
- If no ticket prints, keep the receipt and alert staff before inserting more money.
- If the order is wrong, explain it before staff takes the ticket.
- If you are unsure where to sit, hold the ticket and wait near the machine without blocking the entrance.
